Today's Subhsashita.

of noble and virtuous persons are signs of weakness in the eyes of  mean and wicked persons.

(The idea behind this Subhashit is that wicked people treating the virtues of noble persons as
their weakness, take undue advantage from them, which the noble persons should avoid.)

Today's Subhashita.

i.e.      Just as very hot water or a hot drink (tea or coffee)  again achieves its normal cool
 temperature after some time, similarly the inherent nature of people can not be changed
 otherwise by preaching.

( The phenomenon of heated water again becoming cool after some time has been skillfully
used as a simile in this Subhashita to bring forth the point that the inherent nature of people
can not be changed by preaching.)

to  truthfulness.    No other virtue  is comparable to having  a good moral
character, and no other qualities are comparable to patience and tolerance. .

discriminate between what he should say and what he should not .  As a result neither his work
is done nor  is there  any impact of what he says to others.

meanwhile accomplish all the tasks relating to your self interest, because how
will you be able to do them when you will be dead ?

( Although in this Subhashita the tasks to be performed are not outlined, presumably
these are not ordinary day to day tasks, but are those related to spiritual uplift and
religiosity, which, people postpone for the future, )

task will be spoiled, the uncertain task will also get spoiled.

( There is a proverb in English also that -  'one bird in hand is better than two birds in a
bush' - which also contains the message given in the above Subhashita.}

Today's Subhashita.

Hence it is perceived that it is the destiny that controls the situations
of grief and happiness among all the living beings.

the correctness of its deductions.

Today's Subhashita.

the welfare of the society do their philanthropic work without expecting any respect
in return of such work and  do not differentiate between the deserving persons, as
also do not depend upon others to finance their such activities.

(  The author of this Subhashita has skillfully used the two meanings of the words 'sneha',
 'patra' and 'dashantar' and used a simile of a jewel lamp for a philanthropic person, who
uses his wealth for such work without expecting anything in return.)

Pitarah = ancestors.     Tasya = his.     Vimukha = disinclined or opposed.
Sah = together with.     Devataih = Gods.

i.e.      In a household if an unannounced guest entitled to proper hospitality is not given
due respect and leaves with a sigh of disgust, then its ancestors together with the Gods
become disinclined towards it.

( In the Indian Society giving proper and due respect to the guests of the household is
considered an important duty, and they are even equated as gods (Atithi Devo Bhava).
The ancestors of the household are also revered like Gods. Thus this Subhashita indirectly
exhorts the people to give due respect to their guests.)

and merit.  So long he will be alive he will be rude and ill mannered.  No doubt, such
a son be better dead than alive.

assembly of persons.  This has been ordained by not an ordinary
person but by Vruhaspati ,the high priest of the Gods.

(  Maintenance of proper secrecy is one of the most important
pre-requisites of administration, which has been highlighted by this
Subhashita)

( In the above Subhashita the author has skillfully used the simile of the
phenomenon of creation of tides in the Ocean due to the gravitational pull
of the Moon/  If learned men befriend other noble persons, they will
definitely benefit from such friendship in the long run, even if they may
not be in need of any help.)

Today's Subhashita.

Api meroopamam pragya api shooramapi sthiram.
Truneekaroti trushnaikaa nimeshena narottamam.

Api = eve.     Meroopamam = meru + upamam.      Meru = name of the
mountain of Gods.     Upamam = like.      Praagya = highly learned.

Karoti = does.    Trushnaikaa= Trushnaa +eka.      Trushnaa = greed.
ekaa = single   Nimeshena = within a  moment.    Narottamam = best of men

i.e.      A  distinguished person may be  learned and very respectable like the
Meru mountain of the Gods and may be  resolute and brave like a warrior,
But if he becomes greedy and not able to control his greed, he  loses all his status
in no time and becomes insignificant  like a blade of ordinary grass

( Scriptures have classified desire, which is the driving force of all human activities
 and progress, into three categories namely simple wish, desire and greed.   When a
person becomes greedy he goes to any extent to satisfy his greed and then his downfall
is imminent, even if he may be a renowned person. This Subhashita deals with this
aspect of human nature beautifully.)

Today's Subhashita.

Api bandhutayaa naari bahuputraa gunairyutaa.
shochyaa bhavati saa naaree patiheenaa tapasvani.

Api = even.     Bandhutayaa = bandhu + tayaa.   Bandhu = relatives. Tayaa = having.

Bhavati = becomes.         Saa = that.    Patiheena = without a husband.
Tapasvini = ascetic, a poor wretched woman.

i.e.      Even if a woman may be having many relatives and sons, and she may have many
virtues, her condition in the society becomes miserable and deplorable like a wretched
poor ascetic, if she becomes a widow (without a husband).

( In Hindu society due to the downfall of the Joint Family system, old persons especially
widows are not treated in a dignified manner and even their sons and relatives abandon them. This phenomenon has been highlighted in the above Subhashita.)

Today's Subhashita.

Apaare kaavya sansaare kavireva prajaapatih  .
Yathaa vai rochate vishvam tathdam parivartate.

Rochate = likes.    Vishvam =  Universe.   Tathaidam = tatha +
idam.      Tatha= so.    Idam = this.   Parivartate = changes.

i.e.    In this boundless domain of Poetry, a poet is like the God Brahma, the
Creator of the Universe.  As the Brahma makes changes in the Universe as
He pleases, in the same manner a poet is also the master of  his free will.

(There is a saying in Hindi which means that a poet can reach a place where
even the Sun can not reach, which implies that the imagination and reach
of a competent poet is boundless. Poets  are the harbingers of positive change
in the Society and this fact has been highlighted in this Subhashita by the
use of a simile.)

Ekenaapi = ekan + api.     Eken = by one.    Api = even.    Hi = surely.
Shoorena = by a brave man.      Padaakraantm = trampled by the feet,

Sphurita =flashing.            Tejasaa = powerful (rays of the Sun )

i.e.      Even a single brave man can trample this Earth (have full control  over
all its territories) just like the Sun, which brightens the Earth by its flashing
and powerful rays.

( The history of the World is full of example of warriors who conquered many
 countries and ruled over them. This Subhashita refers them indirectly by using
 the simile of the Sun. )

Today's Subhashita.

Kavih pita poshayati paalako rasikah patih.

Kavih =  a poet .      Pita = father.       Poshayati = brings  up

born from  the same mother.  Tu =  also    .    Vivekinah =
distinguished  and judicious  persons.

i.e.     If poetry be a beautiful young woman, then a poet,who creates
and nurtures her, is her guardian and father.  Likewise, a connoisseur
of fine arts and poetry is like her husband and distinguished and judicious
persons are also like her real brothers.

Kaanprucchaamah sudhaa svarge nivaaamo vayam bhuvi .
Kim vaa  kaavyarasah svaaduh kim vaa svaadeeyasee sudhaa.

Kaanprucchaamah = Kaam + prucchaamah.    Kaam  = from whom.

Vayam = we.    Bhuvi = the Earth.    Kim = what, then.     Vaa = is
Kaavyrasah = flavour or sweetness of poetry.    Svaadu = tasty, delicious.
Svaadeeyasee = more savoury than,  sweeter.

i.e.       From whom should I enquire whether the taste of 'Sudha' , the beverage of Gods
 is more sweeter than the  joy of listening to good poetry, because we live on this Earth
and 'Sudhaa is available only in the Heaven.

(In this Subhashita by comparing poetry with the nectar of Gods, the author has highlighted
the importance of good poetry.)

Aviditagunaapi sukaverbhanatih karneshu kirati madhudhaaraam.
Anadhigatparimalaapi  hi  harate drusham maalateemaalaa.

Bhanitih = discourse, speech.    Karneshu = in tghe ears.    Kirati = pours.
Madhudhaaraam = a stream of honey.      Anadhigat= not acquired.  Parimala= fragrance.
Hi = surely.    Harate = steals,deprives.       Drusham = appearance, look.
Maalati =   Jasmine flower, known for its fragrance.     Maalaam = garland.

I.e.      An unknown but competent poet's discourse is  impressive and pleasing  like a stream
of honey put in one's ears, in the same manner as the fragranceof Maalati flowers draws more
attention and appreciation and definitely deprives the garland made out of these flowers from
such attention.

(The idea behind this Subhashita is that the discourse of a poet is more powerful than his
personality, just like the scent of Maalati flowers, which is appreciated  more than a garland
made out of the flowers.)

Today's Subhashita.

Kim kavestasya kaavyena kim kaandena dhanushmatah.
Parasya hrudaye lagnam na poornayati yacchirah .

Kim = what ?     kavestasya= kaveh +tasya.    Kaveh = poets.    Tasya =whose.

intersecting.     Na = not.     Poornayati =  fills , enters .
Yacchirah = yad +shirah      Yat = that        Shirah = head.

i.e.    Of what use is a poet whose poems do not touch the hearts of others (liked by them ) and of what use is also an archer who is not able to pierce the head of his opponent with his arrow ?

( In an indirect way this Subhashita asserts that only those poets are superior  whose poetry is able to stir the hearts of their  readers , and only those archers are successful who can hit their targets correctly.)

Today's Subhashita.

Vat = like (implying resemblence).    Vardhante = grow, exalted.
Vidhukaantibhh = vidhu + kaantibhih.    Vidhu = moon.   Kaantibhih = beauty.splendour.

i.e.     The level of water in a well does not increase like that of the ocean by facing the bright and beautiful Moon.  Likewise, poets are also not satisfied at the beautiful verses composed by other poets.

( Through this Subhashita the author has indirectly praised the noble and virtuous persons, who are elated by observing the progress of other persons, unlike mean persons,who are envious at the progress of others. This fact has been highlighted  by the use of a simile of the Ocean, in which tides are formed on the day of full Moon, whereas the water of wells remains unaffected. For the poets the simile of a well has been skillfully used. )

Today's Subhashita.

i.e.       Where is age of any consequence for the children born in famous and powerful families, so far as their vibrancy is concerned ?   See, how the rays of the rising Sun by falling on the Mountains
brighten them.

(Through this Subhashita  by using the simile of a rising Sun , the author has tried to emphasise that
children born in illustrious and powerful families are full of vibrancy even in their childhood and being young is  immaterial )

Today's Subhshita.

Guravo bahavah santi shishyavittaapahaarakah.
Durlabhh sa gururloke shishyachintaapahaarakah.

chintaa + apahaarakah.       Chinta = worries, anxieties, queries.

i.e.     In this World there are teachers aplenty who plunder the wealth of their students, but such
teachers are rare who are committed to remove the ignorance and worries of their students.

( In the present context, where imparting education has become a big business without any scruples, and the teachers have lost the halo and respect they used to get in the past, this Subhashita has highlighted this perennial problem of very costly education,which is increasing day by day.)
.
