a person of the highest caste (a brahmin) as a guest, he should be
welcomed and extended due courtesy because an unannounced
guest is considered as the embodiment of all the Gods.

i.e.      If persons of  best quality and nature ever become angry
due to some reason, such anger is momentary.  In  the  case  of
persons of average quality the anger lasts for two 'prahars' (six
hours) and in the case of persons of low category it lasts for a
day and night (24 hours).  But in the case of most wicked and
bad persons, it never leaves them (they always remain angry)..

deeds done long time back, even rich persons too become poor..

Today's Subhashita.

Ujjvalagunamabhyuditm kshudro drushtm cha kathamapi  kshamate.

api.    Tanu = body.   Api = even.   Shalabho = moths (flying insects)
Deepaarchisham = the flame of an oil lamp.    Harati =  robs.

i.e     Lowly and mean persons always envy and dislike the fame and
progress of other people and never condone them, and are always eager
to harm them even at a loss to themselves, just like the moths, which
on seeing a bright flame of an oil lamp in the night, extinguish it by
burning themseves on it,

( In this Subhashita by the use of a simile of a burning oil lamp and  a
swarm of  moths extinguishing its flame by burning themselves on it ,
the author has described  the tendency of envy among mean and lowly
persons over the progress of others and harming them even at a  loss to
themselves. This simile  is also used  in Persian and Urdu literature ,but
in  the  different context  of unending one sided loyalty to one's beloved.)

Today's Subhashita

Ujjvalam saralaam chaiva vakramaaraktmeva cha,
Ndtram chaturbhidam proktam tasya bhaavaa prathakprathak, (1)

Ujjvalam priyasamyoge saralam putradarshane /

i.e.     Learned persons have rightly said that human eyes are capable
of expressing four types of different emotions through their radiance,
tenderness, crookedness and redness.
           When people meet someone dear or close to them  the eyes
become bright and   radiant,,  become tender on seeing a son,  become
envious on seeing beautiful women, and become red (with rage) on
seeing an enemy.

i.e.         Learned persons have rightly said that destroying
the property of others,  torturing them, hurting them, and
accumulating  weapons, these are the four  hidden causes
of enmity between people.

Ucchaasanagato  neechah neecha eva na chottamah,
Praasaadashikharasyopi kaakh kim garudaayate.

grandeur and status of an Eagle.

i. e.          Mean and inferior persons posted in important  posts,
and  likewise  excellent  and  knowledgeable  persons occupying
insignificant posts, do not beautify such posts.   Can an ordinary
crow sitting over the top of a castle match the grandeur of an Eagle
perched over there ? .

( Now a days it has become a routine that mean and incompetent
persons occupy very important posts and on the contrary noble and
knowledgeable  persons languish in very insignificant  postings  ,
which results in decline of proper administration in all walks of life.
This Subhashita highlights this phenomenon nicely by the use of a
Simile of  a crow and an eagle. )

Raatram = night.   Yadaa = when,   Paapo =  sins.  Na =not.

i.e.      In a society where  there is no control over sinful and
illegal deeds, there is  a steep decline in the  religious austerity
of  the  people, and  as a result  there is abnormal  increase in
immorality, and an environment of fear is built up everywhere
at all times (throughout day and night:) .

(The situation as described in the  above Subhashita can be  seen
in many countries around the World.)

Ucchaaroodhairnarairaatma  rakshaneeyotiyatnatah.
Doorarohapribhrumsha  vinipaatah  suduhsah.

Suduhsah = very difficult to endure.

i.e.           Those persons who have acquired a high position  or
a place, should  make special efforts to  retain them , because,
falling  down from such  a high position and being deprived of
their benefits  is very painful and difficult to endure.

Uchitam vyayasheelasya krushatvamapi shobhate.
Dviteeyashchandramaa vandyo na vandyah poornachandramaa.

Uchitam = proper, appropriate.   Vyayasheelasya =  a spendthrift

Dviteeyaah =  The second day of the waxing Moon.   Chandrama=
the Moon.    Vandyo = Venerable, adorable,  No = not.  Vandyah =
venerable.    Poornachandrama + full Moon

i.e.            It is appropriate  that a lean and thin spendthrift  person
(due to his charitable nature) is more adorable in the society, just like
a thin waxing Moon  of the second day of  the fortnight is venerated
more than the full Moon on the 15th day of the fortnight.

(The phenomenon of two fortnights of waxing and waning Moon has
been used as a Simile in this Subhashita to praise persons of charitable
nature but having a lean and thin body like the Moon's second day of
the waxing fortnight being more adorable and venerable rather than the
full Moon.  Muslims also venerate the second day of the waxing moon
as their Eid festival)

Bhaskarah  = the Sun.

i.e.    While dealing with others  we should behave firmly (angrily)
or courteously only after properly assessing the prevailing situation.
See !  even  the  mighty burning Sun  also becomes subdued when
darkness approaches (at the time of Sunset).

( In this Subhashita by the use of a Simile of the setting Sun,  the
author has advised that while dealing with others one should behave
firmly (angrily) or gently (with courtesy) only after properly assessing
the prevailing situation. When the situation is adverse showing anger
does not help at all.)  ,

long.    Ayuh =  life.    Iti = that.     Praahurmaneeshinah =
Praahuh + maneeshinah.      Praahuh =  proclaimeed..
Maneeshinah = noble and intelligent persons.

i.e.    Noble persons have proclaimed that giving away wealth
as charity is the best form of its use,  and a person becomes
intelligent  and learned if he serves  virtuous and  noble aged
persons,  and becomes long lived if he observes  non-violence.

(According to Hindu Religion there are three ways in which
wealth is consumed, namely charity, conspicuous consumption
and for destructive purposes, Similarly serving noble and aged
persons and observing non-violence also makes a person long
lived and intelligent.  These well established facts have been
nicely incorporated in the above Subhashita.)

any sort, and  over-confidence,  all these seven traits in  a person are the
main reasons of causing impediments and defects in any work undertaken
by him.

shloka is part of advice given to him by a sage  not to do it..

i.e. O king Janamejaya !  envy is the root cause of enmity among
people and contrary to this forgiveness and forbearance is the
root cause of prosperity.  Due to the bad habit of being envious and
being cursed by a priest  or a Brahmana (for misbehaving with him)
people have to undergo too much suffering.

 bad deeds one does, their result is visible elsewhere e.g. the family
of a criminal has also to suffer on account of his wrongdoings, and
the family of a virtuous person may get the benefit of his good deeds
in some another form ..)

also easily identified among  wicked  and cruel persons due to his
benevolent and helping nature ?

(The outwardly appearance of a crow and a cuckoo bird is the same
and they are differentiated only by their voice. While a cuckoo bird's
voice is very sweet , the crow's voice is very harsh.  Using this as
a simile this Subhashita has differentiated between wicked and  noble
persons.)

person.    Kathaabhih = by telling  imaginative stories.      Budham =
learned persons.     Vidyaabhee =  through knowledge.     Rasikam =
a  connoisseur (person with a good taste and judgement  of fine arts
and other good things in life.)     Rasena = through indulgence  in the
 subjects of their liking.     Sakalam = total, all,     Sheelena  =pious
and courteous behaviour.      Kuryaat =   do.     Vasham = control.

i.e.    We can control (win over) our friends through transparent and
courteous behaviour,  our enemies through political wisdom,  a greedy
person through money power, the God Almighty by doing virtuous and
philanthropic deeds,  Brahmins by showing respect to them,young women
by extending love  and affection towards them, our close relatives by
behaving with them gently and respectfully,  a very angry person by
praising him,  our teachers through obeisance and salutations , a foolish
person by telling him fables with moral teachings, learned persons by
engaging them in literary pursuits,  connoisseurs of fine and good things
through indulgence in the subject of their liking,   But if all these are to
be controlled by only one means, then it is the pious and courteous behaviour.

Today's Subhashita.

Yauvanam jarayaa grastamaarogyam vyaadhibhirhatam.
Jeevitum mrutyurabhyeti trushnekaa niropadravaa.

Yauvanam =  youth.     Jarayaa = by the ageing process.
Grastamaarogyam = grastam +aarogyam.     Grastam =
afflicted by.    Arogyam = health.    Vyadhibhirhatam =
vyadhibhih + hatam ,     Vyadhibhih = various diseases.
Hatam = ruined, hurt.     Jeevitam = while alive,
Mrutyurabhyeti = Mrutyuh + abhyeti.   Mrutyuh =death.
Abhyeti = approaches,.    Trushnaikaa =trushnaa + ikaah.
Trushnaa = greed, uncontrollable desire to acquire and
possess worldly things and comforts,   ikaa = the only one
Nirupadravaa = secure, free from any sort of  danger..

i.e.       Youth is afflicted by the ageing process and health is
ruined by various diseases.  Death is always after the life
of living beings to snub it, but there is one and only instinct
of  greed  prevailing among  the living beings, which never
gets destroyed.

( Through this Subhashita the author emphasizes the fact that
while other faculties bestowed to human beings are subject
to destruction, the instinct of greed does not face any danger.)

Today's Subhashita.

Hey  daaridrya nmastestu dhanyoham tvatprasaadatah.
Lokaanpashyaamyaham sarvaann maam pashyati kashchan..

Hey=   O !     Daaridrya = poverty.   Namastestu= namaste +
astu..     Namaste  = salutations.  Astu -= be it.   Dhanyoham =
Dhanya + aham.    Dhanyo = fortunate,blessed.  Amam = I am.
Tvatprasadaatah =  tvad + prasaadatah.    Tvad   = thou.
Prasaadatah = free gift,  benevolence.     Lokaanpashyaamyaha
lookaan + pashyaami + aham.     Lokaan = other people.
Pashyami = see.     Aham = I, , myself.    Sarvaanna =
Sarvaan + na.      Sarvaan = all others.    Na = not    Maam =
to me.    Pashyati = sees.     Kashchana = somebody, others.

i.e.       O poverty !  I salute thee most reverentially.  Due to
your benevolence showered upon me, I have now become so
blessed that I now see (seek something from)every body but no
body ever cares to see (care for) me.

(The above Subhashita is a fine example of a metaphor called
"Vyaajstuti" i.e. condemnation of some thing disguised as a
praise,)
