told the lion that the delay was due to another Lion in the
forest and took the Lion to a deep well and asked the Lion
to peep inside the well. On seeing his reflection in the well
the Lion jumped inside the well and was killed due to the
intelligent plan of the rabbit .)

is lesser than his income, it is a state of bliss. However,
if his income is just equal  to his expenditure he is on
the verge of facing a disaster art any time, and  if his
expenditure is more than his income he is already in
deep trouble.  This dictum has been beautifully stated
in the above Subhasita.)

conservation of forests.

( This Subhashita displays the sensitivity of our ancestors towards
tree plantation and conservation of forests  by linking it with
religious austerity .)

Eko hi kurate paapam kaalapaashavasham gatah.

Aatma = self.   Apachaarena = due to criminal or improper

i.e.    If a person commits  even a single sin in his lifetime he
is subjected to the noose of Yama, the God of Death,  Due to
sinful acts done by wicked people their entire family dynasty
gets destroyed in the long run.

(According to Sanaatan Dharma,  Yama is the God of death and
depending upon the good or bad deeds done by people during their
lifetime,  they are assigned the Heaven or the Hell. The veracity
of the above Subhashita can be judged by the fate of numerous
dictators and enemies of society, whose dynasties have disappeared
from this Earth.)

Ekopyamaatyo medhavee shooro daksho vichakshanah,

i.e.     Even if only one minister in a kingdom be intelligent,
brave, skillful in his work . wise and learned. he gets great
respect  and recognition from the King or from the citizens and
becomes very prosperous.

(The idea behind this Subhashita is that even a single competent
Minister can run the administration  of a kingdom and gets recognition
and respect from both the King and his subjects.)

i.e.    Extremely bright Sun has to brighten the sky alone, and the
very brave and daring Lion has to live alone in a forest.Very large
and extensive sky is a part of  a great and unending void, and the
very deep ocean's water is alkaline and not potable.

The idea behind this Subhashit is that all great things or beings are
 destined to be the only one of their kind and have to face aloofness.)

Eko = one.    Lobho = greed.    Mahaagraaho = a big crocodile,

i.e.     Morbid affection towards  greed alone grips a person like
a crocodile, as a result of which he behaves immorally and commits
various sinful sinful acts and  consequently his life becomes full of
miseries.

Eko bahoonaam moorkhaanaam madhye nipatito budhh,

i.e.          If a wise and learned person perchance falls into the
company of many foolish persons, his condition is just like a
single lotus flower drifting in the turbulent waves of water, and
it is certain that he will get confused and face many hardships.

and righteous person on seeing an opportunity of knowing himself
resists  and overcomes all sorts of worldly temptations (and conquers
them ).

Ekopi gunavaan putro nirgunena shatena kim.

all good qualities, e.g. the Moon alone is capable of removing
the darkness in the sky and not thousands of stars.

Eko na ropito yaavadutpannoyam vrunoparah.

happen.    Bhooritaam = multitude of.

i,e,      Just as in spite of making strenuous efforts for not
allowing a boil to grow in one's body , many more boils
erupt, it is also true that in the same manner the confusion
generated  by a false  accusation or a rumour , creates  a
multitudes of rumours, which is disastrous.

by  observing  tolerance  and  forgiveness.         By acquiring
knowledge one becomes wise and visionary and by practicing
nonviolence one leads a pleasurable life.

Ekopi yatra nagare prasiddhah syaaddhanurdharah.
Tato yaantyarayo dooram mrugaah simhagruhaadiva.

Ekopi = eko + api.     Eko = one.    Api = even.   Yatra =

Deers, animals.    Simhagrahaadiva.   Simha + gruhaat +
iva.     Simha = lion.     Gruhaat =  abodes.       Iva = so.

i.e.          Even if there may be  only one famous archer
(a hunter) in a city, the wild animals,deer, and lions abandon
their abodes in the nearby forest and speedily migrate to far
off forests.

(The problem of poaching wild animals in forests has become
endemic now a days.  But by seeing this Subhashita it appears
that the problem existed in the past as well.

Ekodara samudbhootaa ekanakshatra jaatakaah.
Na bhavanti samaah sheele yathaa badarakantakaah.

Kantakaah = thorns.

i.e.      Persons born from the womb of the same mother and
with the same constellation of stars at the time of their birth,
do not possess the same virtues and character , just like the
thorns of a berry tree , which are different from each other in
their shape and size.

(In Astrology the sky is divided into 12 moon signs which are
identified by 27 constellation of stars called 'Nakshatras'.,
according to which the moon sign of a newborn is decided.
This Subhashita says that in spite of the mother and the time
of birth being the same, the temperament and virtues of the
newborns are still different depending upon their 'karma' in their
previous birth )

Ekenaapi sudheerena sotsaahena ranam prati.

i.e.       If there is even one person in an army, who is very firm
and resolute, full of zeal and enthusiasm for winning in a battle,
he is successful in creating similar zeal and enthusiasm in the army.
In the absence  of such zeal there is every likelihood of the army
suffering  a defeat.

(In this Subhashita  the basic qualities of the commander of an army
have been described, which in turn enthuse the will to fight and win
among the soldiers.)

in_Hinduism#Legend).

i.e.     Even if a person may have only one son, but if he is
humble and accomplished, he brings fame and honour to
his family dynasty just like the King Bhagirath , who
brought name and honour to his family  by bringing the
sacred river Ganges from Heaven to the Earth.

during its waning fortnight.     Rucharishchandro = ruchirah +
Chandro.     Ruchirah = brilliant, charming.   Chandro = the
Moon.      Doshakarop = doshakaro + api.     Doshakaro =
causing harm,  defective.     San = being.

i.e.    Oh !  if a person has even a single virtue,, he is appreciated
and envied in society just like the beautiful and shining Moon,
which, in spite of its defect of losing its phases one by one during
its waning period, is still appreciated and envied

Ekenaapi gunavataa vidyaayuktena saadhunaa.
