खलः सत्क्रियमाणोपि ददाति  कलहं सतां
दुग्ध धौतोपि  किं याति वायसः कलहंसताम 

Khalah satkriyamaanopi dadaati kalahh sataam
dugdh dhotopi kim yaati vayasahh kalhanstaam 

i.e.  A mean person inspite of being helped and shown kindness to him, in return creates quarrel and conflict, just like a crow which can not become white inspite of being repeatedly washed with milk.

To day's Subhashit.

गवादीनं पयोन्येद्दू सद्द्योवा जायते  दधि
क्षीरोदधेस्तु नाद्दयापि महताम विकृति कुतः


Gawadeenam payonyedyu sadyo wa jaayate dadhi
kshirodadhestu naadyaapi mahtaam vikrutim kutah.


i.e.  Cow's milk turns sour and becomes  yoghurt (curd) within a day, whereas 'Ksheeer Saagar' (ocean of Milk) never turns sour, thereby implying those who are powerful and illustrious do not degenerate like ordinary people.


Ksheer Sagar  =In Hindu mythology there is mention of an ocean of Milk which is the abode of Lord Vishnu.

To day's Subhashit

 य: प्रीणयेत्सु चरितै: पितरं  स पुत्र:
यद्भर्तुरेव हितुमिच्छति तत्क्लत्रम
तन्मित्र मापदी सुखे च समक्रियम य:
देतत्रयं जगति  पुन्यकृतो  लभंते  .


Yahh prenayeatsu charitaih pitaram sa putrahh
yadbharturev hitmichhuti tatkalatram
tanmitra maapadi sukhey ch samakriyam yah
detatrayam jagati punya kruto labhante.   

i.e.  A son who offers 'Tarpan' to his ancestors, a woman who always thinks about the welfare and comforts of her husband, a friend who is available to assist during both good and bad times, these three types of persons one gets only if he has earned  'Punya' in his previous birth.

Tarpan = It is a ritual performed by person to remember and pay obeisance to his ancestors every year during a particular fortnight called "Pitrupaksh" as also on the death anniversary of  his departed parents and grand parents.

Punya = Is a concept of Hindu Religion whereby a person gets and accumulates reward for his good deeds done to others through the benevolence of God Almighty, which normally fructify in his subsequent re-birth cycle.

विपदि धैर्यमथाSSभ्युदये क्षमा 
सदसि वाक्पटुता युधि विक्रमः 
यशसि चा भिरुचिSर्व्यसनम श्रुतो 
प्रकृति सिद्धामिदम हि महात्मनाम 
Vipadi dhairyamathaabhuyuidaye kshmaa
sadasi vakpatuta yudhi vikramey
yashasi cha bhiuruchirvyasanam
prakriti siddhamidam hi mahaatmanaam 

i.e.  Patience at the time of facing danger, forgiveness to others when in a commanding position, oratory and command over language in an assembly,  valor in a battle, desire to be acclaimed by others, fond of learning Vedas and scriptures  , all these attributes are by nature found in great and noble persons. 

Vyasanam = addiction or fondness      Shruti = Four Vedas (and other religious books)

To day's Subhashit.

श्रुतिर्विभिंन्ना स्म्रितियश्च भिन्ना नैको मुनिर्यश्च वचः प्रमाणं
धर्मस्य  तत्वं निहतं गुहायाम महाजनों यंन गतः स पन्थाः 

Shrutirvibhinna smritiyasscha bhinnaa naiko muniryasch vachahh p0ramaanam
dharmasya tatrwam nihatam guhaayaam mahasjano yean gathh sa panthaah.

i.e. What is 'Dharma' is defined differently in 'Vedas' and subsequent treatises in Sanskrit language known as 'Smriti' (e.g. 'Manusmriti = a Smriti written by Manu). The rulings given by other Sages from time to time about 'Dharma' are also not considered final. In fact the the essence of 'Dharma' is like an object hidden from public view inside a cave (guhaa) . So it is better to follow the path traversed by most of the great Sages (mahaajan) in the past.

('Dharma' is broadly known as Religion i.e.what should be done and what should not be done codified in various scriptures of different societies.    'Shruti' means the four Vedas ie. Rigveda,Yajurveda,Saamveda and Atharvaveda dealing with different aspects of our social life.  'Smriri' also known as Dharma Sanhitas e.g. 'Manusmriti' authored by Manu, who has codified various aspects of human behavior in society.)

सद्भिस्तु  लीलया प्रोक्तं शिला लिखितमक्षरं   
असद्भिः शपथेनापि जले लिखितमक्ष्ररं 

Sadbhistu leelaya proktam shila likhit makshram
asadbhih shapthenaapi jale likhitmaksharam.

i.e.  Righteous persons honor their promises, even if said jokingly, like a sermon written on a slab of stone (unchangeable), whereas the promises made by mean and crooked persons even on oath are like words written on the surface of water (which disappear while writing them) thereby implying that they are never honored.

Sadbhi = a righteous person     Asadbhi = a person who is not righteous  Shila = a slab of stone
shila likhit makshram = words written on a slab of stone (a sermom like 'Ten commandments' written on a slab of stone).

To day's Subhashit

असाधु: साधुर्वा भवति खलु जात्येव पुरुषो:
न संगा द्दोर्जन्यम नहि सुजनता कस्यचिदपि
प्ररुढ़े संसर्गे मणिभुज् गयोर्जन्मजनिते 
मणिरनाsहेदोषान्श्प्रशति नहि सर्पो मणिगुणांन 

Asaadhuh saadhurwa bhawati khalu jaatyewa purushoh
Na sanga ddorjanyam naahi sujanataa kasyachidapi
Prarudhey sansargey manibhujagayorjanma janitet
Manirnaahe doshaansprashati nahi sarpo manigunaan.

i.e. There are two types of persons, those who are mean and crooked (assadhu) and those who are noble and kind hearted (Saadhu). A 'sadhu' does not become an 'assadhu' even in the company of an 'assadhu' and similarly an 'asaadhu' does not become a 'saadhu' in the company of a 'saadhu'. This is just like a serpent with a gem stuck in it's hood. Although both are an integral part of each other since birth they do not adopt each other's shortcomings (dosha) and qualities (guna) .

(In Hindu Mythology is is believed that some breeds of serpents have a gem like substance (Mani) attached to their hood since birth. This 'Mani' is supposed to possess qualities of making a person rich and also capable of saving the life of a person from snake bite)

दुर्जन वचनांगारे   दग्धोपी  न विप्रियं वद्त्यार्य:
अगुरपि विदह्यमान: स्वाभाव गंधं पारिज्यताती किं नु 

Durjan vachanangaare dagdhopi na vipriyam vadatyaaryah
Agurapi vidahyamanah swabhaav gandham parijyataat kim nu.

i.e. Even on being subjected to abusive language like a burning piece of coal, a gentleman does not reply in the same way, just like 'agur' (a herbal compound which on burning gives sweet smell), which even on being burnt over coal does not change it's nature (swabhav) of giving sweet smell.

अप्रिय वचन दरिद्रेः प्रिय वचनाढये स्वदार परितुष्टे:  
 पर् परिवाद  निवृत्ते: क्वचित क्वचित पंडिता वसुधा 

Apriya vachan daridraih priya vachnaadhyai swadaar paritishte
par parivaad nivratteh kwachit kwachit panditah vasudha.

i.e.    Persons who act as a miser while speaking ill about others and while praising others are liberal like a rich person, are content with their wives and faithful to them, do not interfere in the affairs of others, rarely adorn this World.

मूर्खत्वं  सुलभं भजस्व कुमते मूर्खस्य  चाष्टो गुणाः
निश्चिन्तो  बहुभोजकोतिमुख्ररो रात्रिदिवं  स्वप्नभाक
कार्याकार्य विचारनान्धवधिरो  मानापमाने समः
प्रायेनामयवर्जितो दृढ वपु: मूर्ख: सुखं  जीवति 

Moorkhatwam sulabham bhajaswa kumate moorkhyasya chaashto gunaah
nishchinto bahubhojkotimukharo raatridivam swapnabhaak
kaaryaakarya vichanaandhvadhiro maanpamaane samah
praayenaamayavarjito dradh vapuh moorkhh sukham jeewati.

i.e. O arrogant (kumate) person (do not belittle and) appreciate (bhajaswa) a foolish person, because he has eight qualities in him, namely (1) he is care free (nishchinta) (2) fond of over-eating (bahubhojak) (3) outspoken  (ati mukhar)  (4) day and night dreamer (raatri divam swapnabhak)  (5) blind and deaf in differentiating what is right and wrong for him (kaaryaakarya vicharaandhvadhro)  (6) neutral towards praise and insult (maanaapamane samah) (7)  robust body free from ailments (praayenamaya varjit vapuh) and lastly (8) lives a happy life (sukham jeewati)

आदि मध्य निधनेशु सौह्र्दम सज्जने भवति नेतरज्जने 
छेद ताप निघर्ष ताड़ने र्नान्य भाव मुपयाती कांचनम  

Aadi madhya nidhneshu sauhradam sajjne bhawati netrajjne
cheda taap nigharsh taadnernanya bhawa mupayaati kanchnam

i.e. Throughout his life until his death a virtuous and noble person never behaves like a mean and lowly person just like Gold which does not shed it's lustre and purity even on being subjected to severe treatment by breaking, beating and melting it over a furnace.

अपकारिशु यः साधु: स साधु:सद्भिरुच्यते                    
 Apakaarishu yah saadhuh sasadhuhsadbhiruchyate
उपकारिशु यः साधु: साधुत्व  तस्य को गुणः                
upkaarishu yah saadhuh saadihutwa tasya ko gunahh

i.e.   One who is kind even to a person doing harm (apakaar) to him is a real gentleman (saadhu). But if a persons behaves like a gentleman only after being obliged (upkaar) in one way or other then how can the qualities of a gentleman (saadhutwa)  be attributed to such a person ?

ऐश्वर्यश्च विभुशनम सुजनता शौर्यस्च  वाक्संयमो
ज्ञानस्योपशमः कुलस्य विनयो वित्तस्य  पात्रे व्ययः 

Aishwaryashcha vibhushnam sujanataa shauryasch vaaksanyamah
gyanasyopshamah kulasya vinayo vittasya  paatrey vyayam.

i.e. An affluent and rich person is adorned if he is kind , a powerful person by his control over his speech, a learned person by his peace of mind , and an aristocrat (kuleen) by his humbleness, and money spent  is appreciated if it  is for a worthy cause (paatrey vyayah).

सुजनम व्यजनम  मन्ये  चारु वंष समुद्भवं


आत्मानं च परिभ्राम्य परताप निवारणं

Sujanam vyajanam manyey Chaaruvansha Samudbhawam
Aatmaanam cha paribhraamya partaap nivaaranam.


i.e. A virtuous and noble person is like a bamboo fan(vyajana), which by revolving itself provides relief to others from heat. Similarly a noble person (sujana) helps others even at the cost of discomfort to himself.

To day's Subhashit


संपदी  यस्य न हर्षो विपदि विषादे रणे च धीरत्वम
 तं भुवनत्रयतिलकं जनयति जननी सुतं विरलम                                                                                                  
Sampadi yasya na harsham vipadi vishaade raney cha dheeratwam
Tam bhuwantraya tilakam janayati janani sutam viralam.

i.e.  A person who is not elated by becoming rich, is not depressed while facing danger and never loses the presence of mind while engaged in a battle (conflict) is adorned everywhere. Such illustrious persons are rarely born to a woman.
      Bhuwantraya tilakam = In Hindu mythology there are three components of this world i.e. Prithwi (land) Aakash (sky) and Paatal (underground). So a person is adorned (tilakam) every where.

आलस्योपहता विद्या परहस्तगताः स्त्रियः  |
अल्पबीजं  हतं क्षेत्रं हतं सैन्यमनायकम् .    ||


Aalasyopahata Vidta Parhasta gatah striyah
Alpa Beejam Hatam Kshetram Hatam Sainyamanaayakam.

Aalasyopahata = Alasya + apakataa.      Aalasya = idleness, laziness.      Apahataa =destroyed.
Vidya = learning.    Parahastgataah = Para + hast.+ gataah     Para = others.    Hast = hand.
Gataah = gone.     Striyah = women.    Alpabeejam = Alpa + beejam .    Alpa = less.
Beejam = seeds        Hatam = destroyed.     Kshetram = fields, farm land. used for growing crops.
Sainyamanaayakam =Sainyam +anaayakam .    Sainya = army.     Anayakam = without a commander.

i.e.     Laziness  results in loss of learning,  women folk are lost if theyare captured by outsiders.. If the desired quantity of seeds is not used for sowing a crop , the crop of a farm land is lost ,and if there is no Commander to lead an army then the army gets defeated (killed).
