Today's Subhashita.

Tadbhojanam yadvijabhukta  shesham.
Tatsauhrudam yatkriyate  parasmin.
Saa praagyataa  yaa  na  karoti  paapam.
Dambham  vinaa yah  kriyate  sa dharmah.

Tat+bhojanam.    Tat = that.    Bhojanam = food.
Yat + dvija=bhukta.   Yat = that.   Dvija= a brahmin.
Bhukta = eaten by.     Shesham =  remaining.
Sauhrudam = friendship for and with.    Kriyate=
 creates.  Parasmin = mutual, from both sides.
Saa = that.   Praagyataa = being learned.   Yaa =
that.   Na = not.    Karoti =does.   Paapam= evil
deeds.   Dambham = hypocrisy.    Vinaa = without.
Yah= whosoever.     Kriyate = is done.    Sa = that.
Dharmah = religious austerity .

i.e.     Only that cooked food is good which remains
after feeding the Brahmans .   A friendship is real
when it is mutual, and  that scholarship is real, which
deters  a  person from  indulging  in  sinful  deeds.
A charitable  deed done without hypocrisy (pomp and
pride) is the real religious austerity.

Anant shaastram bahulaashcha vidyaa.
Svalpashcha kaalo  bahuvighnataa cha.
Yatsaarabhootam tadupaasaneeyam.
Hamso  yathaa  ksheeramivaambum  adhyaat.

Anant =infinite.   Shaastram = treatises on
various disciplines of learning.  Bahulaa +cha.
Bahulaa = numerous.  Cha = and.    Vidyaa =
disciplines of learning.     Swalpah+ cha,
Svalpah= very little,   Kaalo=  time.   Bahu=
many.   Vighnataa = obstacles.     Yat =  that.
Aadhaarabhootam = best.   Tat = that.
Upaasaneeyam = worth attending. Hamso =
a Swan,    Yathaa = for instance.    Ksheeram+
 iva +ambu+ madhyaat.  Ksheera = milk.    Iva =
like (for comparison)   Ambu =water. Madhyaat=
among.

i.e.    There are infinite treaties of learning as also
various disciplines of learning.   On the other hand
the time at our disposal is very limited and many
obstacles also come in the way.  Therefore, under
such circumstance we should  be very selective and
choose only the best subjects which are worth attending
and leave  the rest , ,just like a swan, who separates the
milk from a mixture of milk and water .

(In Sanskrit Literature there is a saying that Swans
have the capacity of separating milk from a mixture
of milk and water.  This has been used as a Simile
to emphasize the importance of being selective while
studying a subject just like a swan, as the time at our
disposal is very limited. )

Today's Subhashita.

Manirlunthati  paadaagre  kaachah  shirasi  dhaaryate .
Krayavikraya  velaayaam  kaachah kaacho  manirmanih.

Manih + lunthati.    Manih = a precious jewel.    Lunthati =
is struck.    Paadagre = toe of the foot.   Kaachah = ordinary
glass.   Shirasi = on the head.    Dhaaryate=  wears, bears.
Krayavikraya=.buying and selling.  Velaayaam=at the time of.
manirmanih = manih + manih.

i.e.     If per chance a person while walking on a road finds a
shining  jewel and thinking it to be a piece of ordinary glass
he kicks it with the toe of his foot, and while going further he
finds a shining piece of ordinary glass and thinking it to be a
jewel uses it to adorn his head, but whenever in future he will
sell it or purchase a jewel he will come to know which was the
ordinary glass and which was the real jewel.

(The idea behind this Subhashita is that only experts can evaluate
the true worth of a person or thing, and ultimately the truth prevails.)

Pathanti  chaturo  vedandharmashaastraanyanwkashah.
Aatmaanam naiva jaananti  darvee paakarasam  yathaa,

Pathanti = read,    Chaturo = cleaver  priests.   Vedaam +
Dharmshaastraani  + anekashah.     Vedaam= the Sacred
Vedas.   Dharmashaastraani =  Religious treatises.

Naiva =not.     Jaananti  = know.     Darvee = a ladle ,
big serving spoon,   Paakrasam = Cooked soup.   Yathaa =
for instance,  just like a.

i.e.      Cleaver priests performing religious rituals for their
clients recite  aloud various Vedas and religious treatises,
but  they do not remain in communion with the Supreme
Spirit,  just like a ladle used for cooking and serving cooked
soup remains  unaffected by the soup.

Tyajanti mitraani dhanairviheenam.
               Putraashcha  daaraashcha suhrajjanaashcha
Tamarthavantam punaraashryanri
                Artho  hi  loke  manushasya  bandhuh.

Tyajanti = abandon, quit.    Mitraani = friends.    Dhanaih +
viheenam,     dhanaih = wealth.   Viheenam = without.

devoted  friends.    Janaah = person   Tam +arthvantam
Tam = they.   Artthvantam = wealthy.  punah + aashrayanti.
Punah = again.    Aashrayanti = depend upon.      Artho =
wealth.   hi =surely.  Loke =in ordinary life.   Manushasya =
man's      Bandhuh=friend.
,

i.e.     The friends, children , wife, and even devoted friends
of a person abandon him if  he does not have any wealth. But
if  per chance he becomes wealthy,  all  of  them again come
back to him. That is why it is said in ordinary life that  wealth
is a man's good friend.

Today's Subhashita .

Kuchailinam  dantamalopidhaarinam.
         Bahvaashinam  nishthurabhaashinam cha.

          Vimunchati Shreeryadi  Chakrapaanih.

kuchailinam = wearing dirty clothes.  Danta +mala

Shreeh =   Lakshmi,the goddess of Wealth,  wealth
personified.   Yadi = even if.    Chakrapaani = God
Vishnu, the  consort of goddess Lakshmi.

i.e.    If a person wears dirty and tattered clothes, his
teeth are covered with plaque,   is aged and speaks
harshly,  remains asleep at the time of Sunrise  and
Sunset,  then Lakshmi,the Goddess of wealth  also
abandons such a person, even if he may be her own
Consort God Vishnu.

(In this Subhashita by  the use of a hyperbole , it has
been propagated that persons having these  shortcomings
are never rich .)

Anyaayopaarjitam dravyam  dash varshaani tishthati.
Praapte  chaikaadashe  varshe  samoolam tadvinashyati.

Anyaaaya  + upaarjitam.    Anyaaya = unjustly.

i.e.    The things and property acquired by a person through
unjust means stays with him for ten years only and on the
arrival of the  eleventh year gets completely destroyed
including the wealth earlier earned through just means.

( The history of mankind is full of  instances to prove the
correctness of this Subhashita,  Even the dynasty of such
persons also comes to an end .)

Today's Subhashita..

Ekamapyaksharam   yastu  Guruh shishyam  prabodhayet.
Pruthivyaam  nasti  taddruvyam  yaddatva sonrunee bhavet.

Ekam+ api.+ aksharam    Ekam= one.   Api= even.  Aksharam
letter of alphabet.   Yastu= to whom.    Guruh = a teacher.

Pruthivyaam = On this Earth.   Naasti = is not.  Tat +druvyam.
Tat = that.    Druvyam = thing, object,    Yat = datvaa,     Yat=
that.    Datvaa = by giving.   So + anrunee.    So = that person;
Anrunee = free from a debt.   Bhavet = will become.

i.e.    If a Guru teaches even a single letter of  the  alphabet  to  a
student, there is no such thing on this Earth,which , on being given
to the Guru can render the student free from the debt of learning
from his teacher,

(Through the use of a hyperbole, the author has highlighted the
sacred and exalted relationship between a guru ans a shishya in
the Sanatan Dharma,)

Yasya chittam  draveebhootam  krupayaa  sarvajantushu.
Tasya  gyaanena  Mokshena  kim  jataabhasmalepanam.

Yasya = whose.   Chittam = Heart.     Draveebhootam =
moved.    Krupayaa = compassionately.   Sarva + jantushu.
Sarva = all.    Jantushu = creatures on the Earth.    Tasya =
his.   Gyaanena = by the avareness.    Mokshena =  release
from rebirth, emancipation.   Kim  = what.   jataa+ bhasma
+ lepanam.    Jataa = twisted and unkept long hairs,
Bhasma = ash,   Lepanam = smearing.

i.e.    If a person's heart is moved by compassion towards all
living beings on this Earth, and with this knowledge (awareness)
he can achieve 'Moksha' , then where is the need for keeping
unkempt and twisted hair locks on the forehead and smearing
ash on the body ?   (reference  of mendicants doing penance  to
achieve salvation )

(Through this Subhashita the author considers the path of serving the
humanity with compassion  as a better way of achieving salvation,)

Today's Subhashita

Dharmam  dhanam  cha  dhaanyam  cha  gurorvachanamaushadham.
Sugraheetam  cha  kartavyamanyathaa  tu na  jeevati.

Dharmam = religious austerity.    Dhanam = wealth.   cha  = and.

of the Guru (the teacher)    Vachan= saying, instructions.   Aushadham=
medicines.  Sugraheetam =should be perceived  properly.   Kartaavyam+
anyathaa.    Kartavyam = duty.    Anyathaa = otherwise.   Tu=  and.
Jeevati = remain alive.

i.e.     We should perceive it properly that it is our foremost duty to practise
religious austerity, acquire and store wealth and food grains (to meet any
contingency), obey the instructions of our Gurus and take proper medicines
on becoming sick.  If  otherwise ,we can not remain alive .

Today's Subhashita.

Sa jeevati .gunaa  yasya   yasya  dharmah sa  jeevati.
Gunadharma-viheenasya  jeevitam  nishprayojanam.

Sa = whosoever.   Jeevati = really lives.   Gunaa = virtues.
Yasya =  whose.    Dharmah = religious austerity.
Gunadharma = virtues and  religious austrity.   Vihanasya=
a person deprived of.   Jeevitam =remaining alive.
Nishprayojanam = having no motive or  aim.

i.e.  Only such a person lives a purposeful life who is virtuous
and practises religious austerity.  A person who is without any
virtues and religiosity has no motive for remaining alive (and
on the other hand is really a burden on the society) .

Today's Subhashita.

Agniraapah  striyo  moorkhaah  sarpo  raajakulaani  Cha.
Nityam  yatnena  sevyaani  sadyah  praanaharaani shat.

Agni+ aapah.    Agni = fire.    Aapah = water.    Striyo=
women.   Moorkhaah = foolish persons.   Sarpo = snakes.
Raajakulaani = royal families.    Cha = and.      Nityam =
always.    Yatnena =with special care.   Sevyaani =  to be
taken care of.       Sadyah = instantly.      Praanaharaani =
capable of taking away or threatening life.     Shat= six.

i.e.    One should handle or deal with fire, water, women,
foolish persons, snakes and Royal families with special
care, because all these six are capable of instantly taking
away or threatening life.

(In the present context inclusion of women in this list is
symbolic of  male dominated society in the past, which is
still in existence in many communities.)

Today's Subhashita.

Atyaasanna  vinaashaaya  doorasthaa  na  phalapradaa.
Sevataam  madhyabhaavena  raajaa  vahnirguruh  striyam.

Ati + aasaanna.    Ati = too much.   Asannaa= proximate.
Vinaashaaya =causing ruin.   Doorasthaa=remaining aloof.
Na =  not.    Phalaprada =  fruitful, producing favourable
result.    Sevataam = should serve.   Madhyabhaaavena =
keeping a moderate distance.   Raajaa = a King, a Ruler.
Vahnih + guruh.     Vahnih = fire.    Guruh = a Teacher.
Strium = women.

i.e.     Too much proximity with a King (Ruler of a Country),
a raging fire,  a Guru (Teacher), and women folk is always
ruinous, and  remaining aloof from them is also not fruitful.
Therefore,  it is advisable that we should serve these four by
maintaining  a moderate distance  (neither too close nor too far)
from them.

Today's Subhashita.

Doorasthopi  na  doorastho  yo  yasya  manasi  sthitah.
Yo   yasya  hrudaye  naasti  sameepasthopi  dooratah.

Doorastho + api.   Doorastho= staying far away.   Api =
even.    Na = not.     Yo =whosoever.     Yasya =whose.
Manasi = in the mind.   Sthitah = existing.    Hrudaye =
in the heart.   Naasti = not.  Sameepasthopi =  Sameepastho
+ api,     Sameepastho = nearby.   Dooratah = far away.

i.e.    If a person is mentally attached to some one, in spite
of his being physically away from him, he does not feel to
be distanced from him.  However, if someone is not closer
to one's heart, mentally he is always far away from him in
spite of the physical proximity with him.

Daane tapasi  shaurye  vaa  vigyaane vinaye  naye .

persons are found in plentiful on this Earth.

.("Bahuratnaa Vasundhara" - the concluding part of this
Subhashita is often quoted in literary conversation .)

Dharmaakhyaane  shmashaane  cha  roginaam yaa matirbhavet.
Sa  sarvadaiva  tishthccetko  na muchayate  bandhanaat.

Dharmaakhyaane = religious discourses.   Shmashaane= a place
where dead bodies are burnt, a crematorium.    cha = amd.
Roginaam = sick persons.     Yaa = that.   Matih+ bhavet.
Matih = state of mind.    Bhavet = happens.    Saa = that.
Sarvadaiva = sarvadaa +eva.    Sarvadaa = always.   Eva = also
Tishthet +chet + ko.    Tishthet= if remains.   Chet = if.  Ko = who.
Na = not.    Muchyet =  become free.   Bandhanaat = from the
bondage of birth and death.

i.e.        If the state of mind of people while listening to a religious
discourse,  attending a funeral ceremony in a crematorium,  and
while suffering from a serious life threatening disease, always remains
intact, can there be any person who will not be free from the bondage
of birth and death ?

(In the three situations mentioned in this subhashita people become
averse to worldly objects and desires, but it is momentary. This fact
has been stated here sarcastically that had this feeling been permanent
people would have been free from the bondage of birth and death.)

Aatmaaparaadha-vrukshasya  phalaanyetaani  Dehinaam.
Daaridrya-duhkha-rogaani  Bandhana-vyasanaani  cha.

Aatmaaparaadha+vrukshasya.    Aatmaaparaadha = one's
own offences.   Vrukshasya= tree's    Phaalaani+ etaani.
Phalaani = fruits, end results.   Etaaani = these.   Dehinaam=
Man, living beings.   Daaridrya poverty.   Duhkha = sorrow,
miseries.   Rogaani = diseases.    Bandhana = imprisonmnt.
Vyasanaani = various types of addictions.   Cha = and.

i,e      The tree of offences done by a person himself ultimately
produces fruits in the form of poverty, miseries, various diseases,
imprisonment and various addictions.

(In this Subhashita the deeds done by a person have been compared
to planting of trees and their results to the fruits produced by the trees.
Good deeds done ultimately result in happiness and welfare whereas
wrong doings result in miseries, diseases etc.     This is the message
conveyed by this Subhashita, )

Pruthivyaam  treeeni  ratnaani  jalamannam  subhashitam.
Moodhaih  paashanakhandeshu  ratnasmgya  vidheeyate.

sayings.               Moodhaih = ignorant and stupid persons.
Paashaan= stone.    Khandeshu = pieces, chips.    Ratna=
precious stone.    Smgya + name.    Vidheeyate = consider.

i.e.  There are  only three precious things on this Earth, namely
water, food and  'Subhashitas' (eloquent  and witty quotes by
learned scholars and poets),  but  ignorant and stupid  people
consider colourful pieces of stones as precious stones.

(This shloka is in praise of  'Subhashitas' , a well known and
popular style of Sanskrit poetry, composed by numerous known
and unknown poets containing eloquent and witty remarks on
diverse subjects. These have been equated to water and food,
without which no livimg being can subsist on this Earth.)

Punarvittam  punarmitram  punarbhaaryaa  punarmahee.
Etatsarvam punarlabhyam  na  shareeram punah punah.

= again and again.

i.e.     Wealth,  friends, wife and landed property if lost can be
acquired again and again , but not this human body (bestowed
upon us by the God Almighty).

Ekaakshara-pradaataaram  yo gurum  naabhivandate.
Shvaana-yoni-shatam  gatvaa  chaandaaleshvabhijaayate.

again and again.

i.e.     A person who does not show due reverence to his
Guru who has initiated him in the sacred  'Om' (ॐ) Mantra
(or taught him even a single word) takes birth as a dog one
hundred times and ultimately is born as a 'Chaandala' .

(In the Sanatan Dharma the highest position is given to a
'Guru' (a teacher) in the society, which, can be judged by
this Subhashita.)

Karmaagata  phalam  pumsaam  buddhih  karmaanusaarinee.
Tathaapi sudhiyashchaaryaa  suvichaaryeva  kurvate.

Karmaagata = Karma+ aagat.     Karma =work.    Aagat =

i,e,      People get  good or bad results according to the activities
undertaken by them and their perception also changes accordingly.
Even then sensible persons do their activities after thoroughly
deliberating over the consequences of their action.

Yathaa  dhenu  sahasreshu  vatso  gacchati  maataram.
Tathaa yaccha  krutam  karmam  kartaaramanugacchati.

Yathaa = for instance.   Dhenu =  cow.   Sahasreshu =
in thousands.    Vatso = calf of a cow.    Gacchati =goes.

done.    Karma = action.   Kartaaram+ anugacchati.
Kartaram=  doer.     Anugacchati = accompany, follows.

i.e.       For instance in a herd of thousands of cows their
calves recognise their respective mothers and then follow
them, in the same manner the deeds done by a person also
follow him thereby implying that ultimately he has to face
the consequences of good or bad deeds done by him.

Today's Subhashita.

Anavasthita  kaaryasya   na  jane  na vane  sukham.
Jano dahati  smsargaadvanam  sangavivarjanaat.

contact .     vivarjanaat= by avoiding.

i.e.   Any unstable business, whether done publicly or
privately (in a forest) does not result in happiness. When
done publicly it results in failure due to the intervention
by the public, and when done privately it also results in
failure for want of the association of the public , thereby
causing grief.

Khanitvaa hi  khanitrena  bhootale  vaari  vindati.

(teacher) . Vidya = knowledge   Shushrooshuradhigacchati
= shushrooshu+ adhigacchati.  Shushrooshu=  eagerness to
obey, serving.   Adhigacchati =  learns.

i.e.    Just as by digging  the surface of earth with the help
of  a spade and pick axe  we are able to find underground
water  (process of digging a well) , in the same manner the
Knowledge a Teacher possesses, can be learnt by a student
by diligently serving and obeying his Teacher.

(In this Subhashita acquiring knowledge from a Guru has
been compared to digging a well to fetch the underground
water., which , besides use of various implements requires
much patience and commitment .)

Santoshastrishu  kartavyah  sva-daare  bhojane  dhane.
Trishu chaiva na kartavyodhyayane  japa-daanayoh.

prayer.     Daanayoh  = giving donations.

i.e.   It is the duty of a person that he should be contented in
respect of three aspects of his life, namely his wife,  the
food he gets, and the wealth in his possession.  On the other
hand he should  never  be contented in respect  of  acquiring
knowledge,  doing 'Japa'  (muttering prayers) and  giving
donations to the needy and poor people.

Dharmaartha-kaama-mokshaanaam  yasyaikopi na vidyate.
Ajagalastanasyaiva  tasya  janma  nirarthakam.

Dharma+artha+kaaaama+mokshaanaam .   Dharma= religion,
Artha =  wealth.   Kaama = erotic love.    mokshaanaam=

nipples or a fleshy part on the neck of domesticated goat.

useless, in vain.

i.e.    If  a person does not possess even a single desire among
the Religious austerity,  acquisition of  wealth,  erotic love and
achieving emancipation (release from the cycle of re-birth) .
then his being born in this World is useless like the outgrowth
on the neck of goats resembling nipples.

Jeevantam mrutavanmanye dehinam  dharmavarjitam.
Mruto dharmena smyukto  deerghajeevee na smshayah.

Jeevantam= life.    Mrutavat+ manye.    Mrutavat = like a
dead person.    Manye = I think.   Dehinam =  living being.
Dharma=  Religion    Varjitam = without.   Mruto = dead.
Dhermena = with Religion.    Smyukto = associated with.
Deerghajeevee = long-lived.  Na = no.   Smshaya= doubt.

i.e.       I think that those living beings who do not observe
religious austerity, although alive,  are like the dead . Although
those who observe religious austerity also die , there is no doubt
that they are long-lived.

Raagyi  dharmini  dharmishthaah  paape  paapaa  same  samaah.
Raajanamanuvartante  yathaa raajaa tathaa prajaah.

Raagy.   Kings,  Rulers of countries.   Dharmini =observer of
Religious austerity.    Dharmishthaa =  religious minded.    Paape=
Sinful, wicked .      Paapaah =  sinful , wicked.    Samey=  same.
Samaah = equal, matching.    Rajaanamanuvartante =  raajaanam +
anuvartante.   Raajanam =  kings.    Anuvartante=  follow up.
Yathaa = than (for comparison),for instance.   Tathaa =accordingly.
Prajaa = the citizens, subjects.

If the King of a Country (rulers in the present times) observes Religious
austerity, then its subjects are also religious minded and peaceful. If the
King is wicked then the citizens are also wicked and sinful . If the king
is simple the citizens are also the same i.e. they follow the example of
their king (or rulers).   That is why it is rightly said that the citizens  of a
Country follow the example set before them by the King.

(The truth behind this Subhashita can be seen in many countries of West
Asia and Africa, where the rulers are cruel and wicked  and so also the
citizens of these countries where there is lawlessness every where.)

Today's Subhashita .

Yasya  sneho  bhayam  tasya   sneho  duhkasya  Bhaajanam.
Sneha moolaani  duhkhaani  taani  tyakttvaa   Vaset  Sukham.

Yasya =  whose.    Sneho =attachment, fondness.    Bhayam =

Sukham = happiness.

i.e.     A person who has attachment and fondness towards a person
or a thing, is also fearful of  some calamity befalling on him. Thus
attachment is the root cause of all sorrows and it is advisable that
one should abandon such attachment and live happily thereafter.
