Eka eva na bhunjeeyaadyadicchecchubhamaatmanah.
Dvitribhirbandhubhih Saardham bhojanam kaarayennarah.

with a half.   Bhojanam = food, meals     Kaarayet +narah.
Kaarayrt = should do.    Narah = a person.

i.e.     A person who desires his welfare and prosperity should
not take his meals alone but do so in the company of  his two or
three friends.

(The idea behind this Subhashita is that one should share his
prosperity with his friends if he desires to be prosperous.)

आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita;

Eka eva mahaandosho bhavataa vimalam kule.
Lumpanti poorvajaam keertim  jaataa jaataa gunaadhikaah .

Eka = one.    Eva = really, only.   Mahaandoshi = mahaan + dosho.

i,e,       The only one defect in the impeccable and famous dynasties
in society is that with the passage of time all the virtues for which
they were famous gradually disappear.

(The truth behind in this Subhashita can be seen in the downfall of
great dynasties of the World  as recorded in History.)

Today's Subhashita.

Etasya tu mahaapraagya doshasya sumahaanataa.
Kshamayaa vipulaam lokaaah sulabhaa he sahishnunaa .

Etasya =  this  is .    Tu = but, and.    Mahaapraagya  =

tolerancee, patience.

i.e.     The only shortcoming in great scholars is that they are
by nature tolerant, forgiving and easily approachable  and
available for help to numerous persons.

(In the present context these virtues are treated as shortcomings
in a person , as people take undue advantage from the person
possessing these virtues.)

Eka eva dame doshah dviteeyo nopapadyate.

 weak, incapable. Manyate = think , perceive.    Janah = people.

i.e.                  There is only one  defect in a person  pursuing
self-control over the faculties of body and mind  and no other
defect.s     That defect is forgiveness on his part , which is
considered as his weakness and timidity by the people..

Shrunoti = listens (to others)    Pashyati = sees.    Stabdhh =
senseless, arrogant, immobile.

i.e.       Consuming liquor  and  pride and arrogance  control the
minds of people like an enemy, and under their  influence people
become inebriated and by becoming senseless are unable to hear ,
and blinded by arrogance are unable  to see  the prosperity of others.

Ekah shatrurnadviteeyosti shatruragyaanatulyah purushasya raajan.
Yenavrutah kurute sampruktah ghoraani karmaani sudaarunaani.

Ekah = one.   Shatrurnadviteeyosti = shatruh +na +dviteeyo+ asti.

person.    Raajan =  King.     Yenaavrutah = yena_aavrutah.    Yena=
by means of  which.    Aavrutah = covered, involved.    Kurute =
does.   Samprayuktah = bound to., dependent on.   Ghoraani  =
horrible.   Karmaani = actions, deeds.    Sudaarunaani = very cruel.

i.e.   O King  !    ignorance is the first and foremost enemy of a person
and there is no other enemy comparable to it, because under its influence
he tends to commit many horrible and cruel deeds,

(Due to ignorance a person is unable to differentiate between  things
that are good and bad  for him, and as a result he does not hesitate to
do deeds that are harmful to him. This fact ha been highlighted in the
above Subhashita.)

Ekah shatam bodhayati praakaarastho dhanurdharah.

a wall or  a raampart. .        Dhanurdharah = an archer.
Dashsahasraani = ten thousand,    Tasmaaddurgam =
tasmaat _ durgam.    Tasmaat = therefore.     Durgam =
a castle.     Vidheeyate = to be  allotted or required.

i.e.     If an archer has to address and inspire his one or one
hundred soldiers, he can do this by standing on a rampart
 or a wall.  But if he has to address from one hundred to
ten thousand soldiers, then he will need a big castle for this
purpose.

(The idea behind this subhashita is that proper place and
other facilities are required to accomplish a task.)

Ekam vastum dvidhaa kartum bahavah santi dhanvinah.
Dhanvee sa maar  evaiko dvayoraikyam karoti yahh.

into two parts.     Kartum = to do.      Bahavah = many,

eva = like.    Eko - only one.    Dvayoraikyam = dvayoh +
aikyam.     Dvayoh = two.    Aikyam = uniting as one.
Karoti = does.    Yahh = who.

i.e.       Archers who can split an object into two parts by
striking with an arrow are available aplenty, but an archer
who can unite two separate entities is the one and only
'Maar' the Cupid god, who is capable to unite two persons
into one entity as a couple.

( In Indian Mythology the God who controls the sexual urge
in all living beings is called 'Maar' or Kaamadeva ( Cupid in
Western Mythology).  He is supposed to strikesboth the sexes
(male and female) by his bow and arrows made of flowers and
by arousing their sexual urge unites them into one entity. This
has been described figuratively  in the above Subhashita.)

Ekah putro varam vidvaanbahubhirnirgunaistu  kim.
Ekastaarayate vansham anye santaapakaarakaah.

Ekah = one.    Putro = son.   Vidvaan = learned.   Bahubhih =

Ekah -  one.   Taarayate = liberates, gets through,   Vansham =
family dynasty.   Anye = others.    Santaapkaarakaah = causing
grief.

i.e.      It is better to have only one son who is learned, rather
than having many sons without any virtues.   The one and only
learned son will be able to preserve and carry forward the family
tradition., whereas having many sons without any virtues simply
causes grief.

Ekam drushtvaa shatam  drushtvaa drushtvaa panchashataanyapi.
ati lobho na kartavyashchakram bhramati mastake

five hundred.    Api = even.    Ati = too much.    Lobho = greed.
Na = not.        Kartavyashchakram  = kartavyah + chakram.
kartavyah = worth doing.   Chakram =  circle.  Bhramati = wander
unsteadily    Mastake = head.

i.e.    Having seen  (or acquired) one unit of any thing (or money) and
after acquiring one  hundred  or even five hundred such units, one should
not become greedy (crave for more), because it results only in making
the mind to become perplexed and spin like a wheel.

 Ekam chakshurviveko hi dviteeyam sarsamaagamah .

Ekam = one       Chakshurviveko =  Chakshuh +viveko.

immediately.   Mohakoopam = moha = koopam.    Moah =
infatuation, confusion, perplexity.   Koopam = a well.
pated -dhruvam =  patet + dhruvam.    Patet = will fall into.
Dhruvam = certainly.

i.e.    The faculty of taking right decisions is like one eye of a
person and association or keeping the company of venerable
persons is like his another eye   A person who does not have
both these faculties, he is like a blind person and will definitely
soon fall into the deep well of infatuation and confusion .

Rinakartaa pitaa shatrurmaataa cha vyabhichaarinee.

illiterate person.

i.e.     If one's father is indebted to others then he is like an
enemy  to   him, and if  his mother is an adulteress she too
is like an enemy  to  him. Having a beautiful wife is also like
an enemy to a person and if his son is illiterate he too is
also like an enemy to him.

Rinam krutam tvadattam chedbaadhatetra paratra cha .

Tadbhuktim = tat + bhuktim.     Tat = that, its.   Bhuktim -=
usufruct (providing some security or payment of interest on
the loan.)   Nishkritim = repayment, requital.  Bina = without.

i,e,    If a loan is taken from a money lender and it is not repaid
timely, the money lender obstructs the borrower here and there
to compel him to repay the loan. This embarrassing situation
does not end until such time either some item is pawned  as security
and interest is paid, or the entire loan is repaid..

(The predicament of a debtor at the hands of a money lender is
described nicely in this Subhashita.)

Rinam mitraanna kartavyam  na deym chaapii  mitrake.

Yasmat +dvai.     Yasmaat = because, since.   Dvai = both
these two.     Rinakartari = rina + kartari    Kartari =
scissors.

i.e.   One should never take a loan from a friend and should
also not give a loan to a friend, because it is well known that
both such loans act as a scissor in snapping the bond of
friendship between persons.

a favour.    Api = even.    Neechaanaam = mean and
wicked persons.   Kruto = done.   Bhavati = becomes.
Taadrush = like that .

i.e.              Just as  it is useless to sow seeds in a farm
having saline soil (unfit for cultivation) where no crop
can grow,  similarly the   favours done to wicked and
and mean persons are also useless and  do not bear any
fruitful results.

in the lowest category known as 'Tamas' ;

(In the scriptures all living beings and things in this world have been
categorized in three categories  according to their nature and qualities.
These are discussed inn detail in the 17th chapter of Bhagvadgeetaa.
The above Subhashita categorizes  human beings accordingly.

are together, their association is described sarcastically in the above
manner.)

him.

(Vaidya) are not available,  one should not live (stay) even
for a day.

(For a progressive  civilisation  all the five pre-requisites
mentioned in this Subhashita are very essential, particularly
a perennial source of water and a competent ruler. This is
evident  by the fact that all the great civilisations of this
World developed in the  vallies of  great rivers like Ganges,
Nile etc,etc, during the rule of great Kings.)

has caused much harm to the social structure and  the
administration.)

(Acquisition of wealth without consumption has been compared to
a daughter, who, after being brought up is ultimately married to
some one else.)

living in a nice home.   Nigrahee = some one without a home.
Kruta = mad, rendered.

i.e.     One should never preach or give guidance without being
asked for to unknown persons.  Look !  how a monkey destroyed
a beautiful abode (of a weaving bird) and rendered her homeless.

(In this subhashita there is an indirect reference to a tale from
Hitopadesh, the famous Sanskrit treatise, about a monkey and a
weaving bird (Baya), which constructs beautiful and cosy nests.

(Realising the importance of marriage ceremonies, religious
rituals of giving  donations and performance of "Yagya",
this Subhashita discourages people not to indulge in putting
obstacles in these rituals by instilling fear in their mind. )

Today's Subhashita.

i.e.      A miser (ungenerous person who lives poorly in order to
store up  wealth) does not know as to how consume his wealth
just like a dog immersed in water up to its neck drinking water
by licking it with its tongue.

(By comparing a miser to a dog licking water in spite  of it
being immersed in water, the author of this Subhashita has
condemned the attitude of a miser, who is not able to put his
wealth to good use and ultimately it is either stole or looted.)
