its  head.   The poison of a Scorpion is in its tail,  but the  entire
body of a mean and wicked person is poisonous.

Daanena  paanirna  tu  kankanena.
Snaanena shuddhirna  tu  chandanena.
Maanena tushtirna  tu  bhojanena,
Gyaanena muktirna tu  mundanena.

Daanena = by giving donations.   Paanih + na.
Paanih = hand.    Na = not.   Tu = and   Kankanena =
A bracelet.  Snaanena = by taking a bath,  Shuddhi =
cleanliness.   Chandanena = by smearing the body
with a paste of sandalwood.    Maanena = by giving
due respect.   Truptih = satisfaction, contentment.
Bhojanena = serving a sumptuous meal.  Gyaanena =
by higher spiritual knowledge.   Muktih = salvation.
Mundanena = by tonsuring the head.

i.e.   Hands are embellished  by giving donations and not
by wearing bracelets.   The body is cleansed by taking a
bath and not by  smearing the paste of sandalwood over
the body.   A person feels contented by being given due
respect and not by simply being provided a meal. A person
can achieve salvation by acquiring higher spiritual knowledge
and not by merely tonsuring his head.

Ashaktastu  bhavetsaadhurbrahmachaaree  vaa  nirdhanah.
Vyaadhito  devabhaktashcha  vruddha  naaree  pativrataa.

Ashaktah +tu.       Ashaktah =  incapable.      Tu = and, but.
Bhavet + saadhuh + brahmachaaree.    Bhavet = should  be.
Saadhuh=a  sage  Brahmachaaree= a person who is a celibate.
Vaa =or.   Nirdhanah = a poor person.     Vyaadhito = a person
suffering from a serious disease.  Devabhaktah =worshiper of
God.     Cha = and.     Vruddhaa =aged.    Naaree =   a woman.
Pativrataa=virtuous woman faithful and devoted to her husband.

i.e.    Incapable persons either become  a sage , a  celibate  or a
poor beggar .  A person suffering from a fatal disease becomes
an ardent devotee of God and an aged wanton woman becomes
a very devoted and virtuous wife.

(The above Subhashita criticizes the tendency among people to
become virtuous when they are incapable or in grave danger.
An Indian poet  Tulasi Das has also remarked that people become
a sage only when their wife dies and all their wealth is lost,)

Pustakasthaa  tu  yaa  idyaa  parahasta  gatam  dhanam.
kaaryakaale samutpanne  na  saa vidyaa na taddhanam.

Pustakaah + tu.    Pustakaah = books.  Tu = and   Yaa =
that.   Vidyaa = knowledge, learning.   Para = others.
Hasta = hands.   Gatam = gone.    Dhanam = wealth.
Kaaryakaale = at the time of need arising.    Samutpanne=
happening, occuring.  Na = not.   Saa = that. Tat+dhanam
Tat = that.

i.e.   Knowledge enshrined only in books and wealth under
under control of others,  whenever need arises for them then
neither  the said knowledge nor the wealth is available.

(There is another Subhashita on this theme, which says that
if pens, books and a woman is let out to some one, the chances
are that they will never be returned.  If per chance they are
returned, the pens will be broken,  books will be torn and the
woman will be trodden down.)

Varaam  praaanaparityaago  maanabhangena jeevanaat.
Praanatyaage  kshanam  Duhkham  maanabhange dine dine.

Varam = iti is preferable.    Praana = breathe of life
Parityaaga = cession.   Maanabhangena= by being insulted
or dishonoured.    Jeevanaat = living.   Praaanatyaage =
by cession of life.   Kshanam= momentary.   Duhkham =
suffering.    Dine dine = every day.

i.e.    It is preferable to die rather than remaining alive on being
insulted .  While in dying there is momentary suffering,on being
insulted one has to  suffer every day.

Today's Subhashita.

Parairuktaguno  yastu  nirgunopi  gunee  bhavet.
Indropi  laghutaa  yaati   svyam  prakhyaapitairgunaih.

Parairuktaguno =  Paraih +ukta+ guno.   Paraih = others.
Ukta = speak, say.    Guno = virtues.   Yastu = to whom,
Nirgunopi=nirguno +api,   Nirguno = without any virtues.
Api = even,    Gunee = virtuous.   Bhavet = becomes.
Indropi = Indro +api.  Indro = name of the king of Gods.
Laghuta =want of dignity.      Yaati =acquires, achieves.
Svyam = himself.  Prakhyaapitairgunaih = prakhyapitaih +
gunaih.   Prakhyaapitaih = by naming himself.     Gunaih  =
virtues.

i.e.     If people treat someone as virtuous, in spite of his being
without any virtuous, he is treated as a virtuous person.  But
if someone declares himself as a virtuous person,  he loses his
dignity, even if he may be Indra , the king of Gods.

 Priyavaakyapradaanena  sarve  tushyanti  jantaavah.
Tasmaattava  vaktavyam  vachane  kaa  daridrata.

Priya = liked, pleasing..  Vaakya = saying.   Pradaanena=
delivering.    Sarve = all.    Tushyanti = are satisfied.
Jantavah = persons.    Tasmaat =  therefore.     Tadeva=
accordingly.   Vaktavyam = statement.     Vachane =
speaking.   Kaa =  what.    Daridrataa = state of being
deprived,  penury.

i.e.    If people are addressed in a polite and pleasing way,
they all are satisfied at it.  Therefore . we should always
speak pleasingly and politely, and why should  we show
our penury in the matter of our speaking to others ?

Alirayam  nalineedala-madhyago.
Kamalinee-makarand-madaalasah.
Vidhivashaatparadeshamupaagatah.
Kujata-pushpa-raasam  bahu-manyate.

Alirayam = fast moving bees.    Nalineedal = among
lotus leaves.  Madhyago=in the middle of.   Kamalanee=
lotus flowers.    . Makaranda rasa = honey of flowers.
Madaalasah = lazy from drunkenness.    Vidhivashaat=
by th quirk of fate.   Paradeshamupaagatah =paradsham+
upaagatah.    Paradesham = in a foreign hostile ccountry.
Upaagata= entered into.   Kujata= name of a  plant having
inferior flower in comparison to a Lotus flower.  Pushpa =
flower.    Rasam = honey.    Bahu = plentiful, abundant.
Manyate =Think.

i.e.         A swarm of honey bees who were accustomed of
moving  among  the leaves and flowers  of lotus and lived
lazily drinking the  honey produced by Lotus flowers, by a
quirk of fate went to a hostile country where lotus flowers
were not available.  There they had to subsist on the inferior
flowers of  'Kujata' , thinking them as plentiful.

(The idea behind this Subhashita is that if a prosperous person
by a quirk of fate has to live in a hostile country, where he can
not maintain his lifestyle.he has to remain satisfied on whatever
he gets .  This has been done by the use of a simile about bees.)

Today's Aubhashita.

Gunaih  svagyatulyopi  seedatyeko  niraashrayah.
Anarghyamapi  maanikyam  hemaashrayamapekshate.

Gunaih = virtues.   Sarvagya+tulyo + api.    Sarvagya=
all -knowing.  Tulya = similar.   Api =  even.   Seedati+
eko.      Seedati = is distressed.        Eko = singly.
Nirashrayah = without any shelter or support.  Anarghyam+
api.    Anarghyam =priceless.    Maanikyam =  a ruby.
Hema + aashrayam + apekshate.   Hema = gold.   Aashrayam=
shelter.    Apekshate = requires.

i.e.      Generally most virtuous and all-knowing  persons have
have to languish and lead a  lonely difficult life for want of
patronage and support from the rich and mighty persons, just
like a precious gem, which  gets recognition an appreciation by
being studded in a gold ornament.

(Generally musicians, artists, poets etc  come into prominence
when they get support and  recognition from the State and rich
people. Otherwise , they languish in oblivion. This fact has been
illustrated by the use of a simile of a gem stone being studded in
a gold ornament.)
