Today's Subhashita.

Yadyapi khadiraaranye gupto vasate hi champako vrukshah
Tadaapi cha parimalamatulam dishidishi kathayetsameeranastasya.

Yadyapi = although.   Khadiraaranye = khadir + aranye.    Khadir =
name of a thorny tree  (botanical name acacia)    Aranye = a forest.
Gupto = hidden    Vaste = exists.    Champako = name of a tree
which produces very fragrant flowers.   Vrukshah = a tree.   Tadapi =
even then.   Parimalamatulam = parimal + atulam.   Parimalam =
fragrance.    Atulam =matchless, incomparable.       Dishi-dishi =
in all directions.  kathayetsameeranastasya = kathayati + sameeranah + ,
tasya.   Kathayati = tells, announces.    Sameeranah = blowing wind.
Tasya = its.

i.e.    Although a 'Champak'  tree grown in a forest of  thorny 'Khadir'
trees, may otherwise remain hidden , even then the blowing wind ,
carrying the incomparable fragrance of its flowers in all directions
tells about its existence in the forest,

(This Subhashita is also an 'Anyokti' (allegory) , the idea behind it
is that a knowledgeable and virtuous person living among ordinary
persons, can not remain hidden for a long time and ultimately people
know about him due to his virtues.)

Today's Subhashita.

Moolam bhungahh shikharam vihangaih
Shaakhaah plavangaih kusumaani bhrungaih.
Naastveva   tat-chandana-paadapasya .
Yannaashritam satvabharaih samantaat

Moolam = roots of a tree.   Bhungahh = snakes,    Shikharam=
on the top.   Vihangaih = birds.   Shaakhaa = branches of a tree.
Plavangaih = monkeys.   Kusumaani = flowers.    Bhrungaih =
large black bees.    Naastyeva = Naasti + eva.     Naasti -does
not exist.   Aiva = really.  Tat = that.   Chandan= sandaalwood.
Padapasya - tree's    Yannaashritam = yat + aashritam.    Yat =
that, whose.    Aashritam =   shelter    Satvabharaih =satva +
bharahi   Sattva = goodness.   Bharaih = bearing,    Samantaat =
all around.

i.e.    Really, there does not exist any other living being so kind and
generous  like  a sandalwood  tree.  which  provides all  around
shelter to the snakes in its roots, to the birds on its top, to the monkeys
on its branches, and to the large black bees on its flowers.

(The above Subhashita is also an "Anyokti' using a sandalwood tree
as an allegory.  The idea behind the Subhashita is that noble and
virtuous persons  help all and sundry without any discrimination i.e.
they consider the entire world as their own family.)

Vaatollaasita-kallola    dhik  tey  Saagara-garjanam.
Yasya teere  trushaakaantah paanthah prucchati vaapikaam.

Vaatollaasita = vaata+ullasit.   Vaata = wind.   Ullaasita =
caused to be agitated.  kallola= billowing waves,    Dhik =
shame on you.     Yasya = whose.   Teere = at the shore.
Trushaakaantah =  very thirsty.   Paanthah = a traveller.
Prucchati = enquires.    Vaapikaam = a pond of potable water.
ou
i.e .     O mighty Ocean !  Shame upon you.   While you are
roaring and producing big waves on being agitated by the
blowing wind,   a very thirsty traveller on your shore is making
enquiries about  a pond where he can quench his thirst .

(The above Subhashita is also an 'Anyokti' using the Ocean as
an allegory.  The idea behind this Subhashita is that of what use
are the riches of a miser if he can not use it to help a needy
person.  An ordinary person who helps under such circumstances
is more useful.)

Today' Subhashita.

Sagunaih sevito-paanto vinataih  praapt-darshanah.
Neechopi koopah satpaatrairjeevanaartham  samaashritah.

Sagunaih  = having a long cord., having virtues.   Sevito = serves.
Paanto =a drink.   Vinataih = by bending down.   Prapta = get.
Darshanah  = view.   Neechopi = neecho + api.    Neecho - deep,
inferior.  api = even.  Koopah =  a well.  Satpaatraih = worthy
recipients      Jeevanaartham = for the sake of protecting the life.
Samaashritah = endowed or provided with.

i.e.    Although a well is very deep and one can see it only by bending
down, it is still always committed to provide water to virtuous persons
and save their life.

(This Subhashita is also an 'anyokti' by using a Well as an allegory.  In
olden times travellers used to keep with them a long cord and a cup,
so that they could draw water from a Well to quench their thirst.  The
word 'sagunaih' in this shloka has two meanings namely (i) virtuous and
(ii)  having a long cord (and a cup), without the help of which they could
not draw water from a Well.  The underlying idea is that for taking out
water from a Well both intelligence and proper equipment are required.)

Today's Subhashita.

Kinshuke shuka maa tishtha chiram bhaavi-phaleccha
Vaahya ranga-prasangena  keke  naaneva vanchitaa.

Kinshuke = name of a tree having very bright red flowers,
also called  'flame  of the forest' ..   Shuka = a parrot.
Maa = do not.   Tishta - stay, live.  Chiram = for a long
time.  Bhaavi = future.   Phalecchayaa = in the hope of
getting fruits.   Vaahya = outer.   Ranga = colour.  Prasangna=
incidentally.   Keke = who.    Naanena = Na + anena.
Na = not.    Anena = by this.    Vanchitaa = deceived, tricked.

i.e.     O parrot !    Do not stay in this Kinshuk tree for a long
time with the hope of getting a good supply of fruits in future.
Incidentally, who has not been deceived if he has relied only
on the outward appearance and colour ?

(The above Subhashita has also been classified as 'Shukaanyokti'.
as it uses the allegory of a parrot .  The 'kinshuka' tree . also
know as 'the flame of the forest' due to its very bright red flowers ,
incidentally does not bear any fruits. So, through this Subhashita
the author warns us that while dealing with others we should not
be influenced only by their outward appearance and colour , which
may result in our being deceived or cheated. )

Naaleneva sthitvaa paadenaikena kunchitgreevam.
Janayati   Kumuda-bhraanti  vruddha-bako baala-matsyaanaam.

Naaleneva = naalen + iva.    Naalena = a hollow stock (stem)
of a lotus flower.   Iva = like a   Paadenaikena = paadena +
ekena.    Paadena = leg.    Ekena = one only.  Kunchitagreevam=
curved neck,   Janayati = creates.   Kumuda = a lotus flower.
Bhraaanti = false impression of . Vruddha = an aged   Bako =
a Crane bird.   Baala  matsyaanaam = small and young fish.

i.e.   By silently standing in water one one leg only with a curved
neck, a crane bird creates a false impression in the minds of small
fish that it is the stem of a lotus flower (and ultimately are caught
and devoured by the crane) .

( Whenever a person with a view to cheating other persons puts
an attire of a virtuous person, such a person is alluded to a crane .
So, this 'anyokti' is a warning against such a person.)

Today's Subhashita.

    Here is another example of an 'Anyooraokti'  termed as 'Mayoraanyokati ' ,
because  a 'Mayoora'  (peacock) has been used as an analogy.

            Yatnaadapi kah pashyanti shikhinaam-aahaara nirgama-sthaanam.
             Yadi jalada-ninada-muditaasta eva moodaa  na  nrutyeyuh.

Yaatnaadapi = even after making special efforts.    Kah = who   Pashyanti =
are able to see.   Shikhinaam = peacocks.     Aahaara = food.    Nirgam =
exit.    Sthaanam = place.    Aahar nirgam sthaan =  anus (a private part of
the body from where digested food exits from the body as feces,)   Yadi =if.
Jalada = a cloud.   Ninaad = rumbling noise made by the clouds.  Muditasta=
delighted by.   Eva = really.   Moodhaa =  stupid, and ignorant     Na = not.
Nrutyeyuh = would have danced.

i.e.      Even after making special efforts  one can not see the anus (private part)
of a peacock until such time when the stupid and ignorant bird starts dancing with
joy on hearing the rumbling sound of rain clouds in the sky.

( It is the  inherent nature of peacocks that whenever there is a cloud burst and  a
heavy downpour of rain, they start dancing with joy by spreading their colorful
wings and in that process their private parts are visible , which generally always
remain concealed. What the author wants to emphasize here is that whenever a
person is in a very happy state of mind (due to intoxication or any other reason)
he unknowingly discloses his secrets, which he would otherwise never do .)

Friday 23 June 2017

Today's Subhashita

           Simhah sishurapi nipatati mada-malina-kapol-bhittishu gajeshu.
           Prakruiriyam satvavataam na khalu vayastejaso  hetuh.

Simhah = a lion.    Shishurapi = shishuh+ api.    Shishuh = a cub (child)
Api = even.   Nipatati = attacks.   Mada = rut (periodical sexual excitement
of animals)   Malin = dirtied.    Kapol = cheek.  Bhittishu = like a wall.
Prukritiriyam = prukriti + iyam.      Prukriti = nature, temperament.
Iyam = this.  Satvavataam = powerful  and courageous persons.  Na  khalu
 = not at all,     Vayastejaso =Vayah + tejaso.    Vayah = age.     Tejaso =
power.   Hetuh =  reason.

i.e.   Even a cub of a Lion fearlessly  and unhesitatingly attacks the wall like
dirtied cheeks of a sexually aroused  Elephant .  This is due to the inherent
nature of powerful and courageous living beings and not at all due to  their
age and strength.

(In this Subhashita the bravery and courage of a lion's cub has been used as an
analogy to emphasize the fact that bravery and power are inherent in certain
species and not in their age and strength.)

Today's Subhashita.

Muncha-muncha  salilam  dayanidhe  naasti-naasti samayo vilambane.
Adya chaatak-kule  mrute punarvaari  vaaridhar kim karishyasi.

Muncha = release, let go.   Salilam = water.   Dayanidhe = a treasury of
mercy, a very kind person , treasury of mercy.    Naasti = it is not.
Samayo = time, occasion.   Vilambane =   delay.   Adya =  today.
Chaatak-kule = the community of 'chaatak' birds.    Mrute = dead.
Punarvaaari =punah + vaari.    Punah = again .    Vaari = water.
Vaaridhara = a cloud.     Kim = what ?          Karishyasi = will do .

i.e.    O very kind cloud  !  bestow us with your rain immediately, as
this is not the time for delaying it.   If today the community of 'Chaatak'
birds die for want of  water, of what use will be the rain poured by you
afterwards.

(On the 19th June 2012 a Subhashita classified as 'Chaatakaanyokti' was
posted by me.  This Subhashita is in furtherance of the same idea and says
that of what use will be the rain afterwards if the 'chatakas' die due to
thirst  ?    When applied to agriculture, the truth behind this Subhashita is
more apparent , because untimely rain is of no use.)

Wednesday 21 June 2017

Today's Subhashita.

              Tulya-varnacchadah krushnah kokilaih saha smgatah.
               Kena vigyaayate kaakh svayam  yadi  na  bhaashate,

Tulya = similar,  equal to.      Varnacchada = colour of feathers and
outward appearance.    Krushnah = black.    Kokilaih = cuckoo bird.
Saha = with.     Sangatah = association, friendship    Kena = how ?
in what way ?     Vigyaayate = distinguish.     Kaakah =  a crow.
Svayam = himself.    Yadhi = if.    Na = not.    Bhaashate = speaks.

i.e.    The outward appearance of a Crow and a Cuckoo bird and the
colour of their feathers is the same and they also live together.  So ,
who can  distinguish between them unless the crow himself does
not speak ?

(A crow is known for its very harsh voice and the cuckoo bird for
its very sweet voice. They can be distinguished only by their voice.
If a foolish person is presented in the attire of a scholar, people may
treat him as a scholar. But as soon as he utters some thing foolishly
his true worth is exposed.   The underlying idea is that in contrast to
outwardly appearance the inherent virtues in a person are important.)

Tuesday 20 June 2017

Today's Subhashita.

          Shauka tava  pathanam  vyasanam na gunah kintu sa gunaabhaasah.
           Samajani yeshaamaranam sharanam tey panjare vaasah.

Shuka = a parrot.    Tava = your     Pathanam  = reading,   Vyasanam =
defect, addiction.   Na = not.   Gunah = virtue.   Kim = but.   Sa = it
Gunaabhaasah = gives  the impression of a virtue.    Samajani = forests.
Yeshaamaranam = until the time of death.   Sharanam =  protection.
Tey = they.   Panjare = a cage.     Vasah =  dwelling, abode.

i.e.     O parrot !   your special ability to speak the language of humans
is  in fact a big defect and not  your virtue but just gives an impression
of a virtue. As a result of this instead of roaming freely in forests you
are doomed to live under the protection of a cage until your death.

(Yesterday an 'anyoakti'  based on a Chaatak bird was posted. Today,
another 'anyokti' based on a Parrot has been posted . In life there are at
times such situations wherein  a virtue puts a person in a very tricky
and disadvantageous situation, This fact has been indirectly highlighted
by the above Subhashita. )

Today's Subhashita..

Re re chaatak saavadhaana-manasaa mitram kshanam shrooytaa-
mambhda   bahavo vasanti  gagane sarvopi naitaadrushaa.
kechid-vrushtibhi-raardrayanti dharanee garjanti kechit-vruthaa.
yam yam pashyasi tasya tasya purato  maa broohi deenam vachh.

Re = Oh !   Chaataka = an Indian bird.   Saavadhaana = attentively.   Manasaa = mind.
Mitram = friend.   Kshanam = for a moment.   Shrooyataam =  listen.    Ambodaa=
clouds.    Bahavo = many    Vasanti = live, roam.   Gagane = in the Sky.   Sarvopi=
Sarvo = all.   Api = even.   Naaitaadrushaa =  Na + etaadrushaa.    Na =  not.
Etaadrusha = similar to others.     Kechit = some among them.  Vrushtibhih +
by causing rain.  Aardrayanti = moisten, drench.   Dharanee = the Earth.   Garjanti +
roar, make rumbling sound.   Vruthaa = in vain, unnecessarily.   Yam = whosoever.
Pashyasi = sees.   Tasya = his .   Purfato = in front of .   Maa = do not.  Bhrrohi =
speak, say.   Deenam = sad.    Vachah = words, speech.

i.e.    O my friend  Chatak bird !  listen  carefully what I say to you.  Many types of
clouds roam in the sky but their characteristics are different.  Only a few among them
drench the Earth with the precious water they carry, whereas the remaining ones roam
here and there and simply make rumbling sound.  Therefore, you should not beg for
water from every cloud you see on the sky.

(In Sanskrit literature there is a style of writing called 'Anyokti' , which in English;
language is called  'allegory'  i.e. description of one thing under image of another.
The above shloka is a fine example of this genre.   There is a folk lore that the Chatak
bird quenches its thirst only from the rain falling on earth during a particular  lunar
position in the sky.  Here the bird has been alluded for a person seeking assistance  and
the persons who can help him has been alluded for the clouds.  Only very few people are
of helping nature and the rest simply give assurances and never give any help .)

Today's Subhashita

Panchashadbhaaga aadeyo Raagyaa pashu hiranyayoh .
Dhaanaanaamashtamo bhaagah shashto dvaadasha eva vaa.

Panchaashadbhaaaga = panchaashat + bhaag.   Panchaashat = 50th .   Bhaag =
division, unit.     Adeyo = to be received.    Raagyaa = by the King.    Pashu =
animals (cows, bullocks etc)     Hiranyayoh = Gold and other precious metals.
 Dhaanyaanaamashtamo = dhaanyaanaam + ashtamo.    Dhaanyaanaam =
various agricultural crops.    Ashtamo = 1/8th     Shashto = 1/6th.   Dvaadasha=
1/12    Eva =  already.    Vaa = or.

i.e.    The king should impose a tax of 2% on the income of traders from the
trade of animals (cows, bullocks etc) , gold and other precious metals.  He should
also impose a tax on the trade of  food grains and other agricultural products
at the rates of  1/8th, 1/6th or 1/12th of income ( depending upon the excellent, good
or bad produce).

(We have  in previous posts discussed various cannons of Taxation enshrined in
'Manusmriti'.  The above shloka also deals with minimum and maximum rates of
taxation which is now being touted as a revolutionary concept of  taxation termed
as 'Goods and Service Tax, )

Today's Subhashita.

Yatha-alpaalpa-madantyaadyam vaaryoko-vatsa-shadpadaah.
Tatha-alpaalyo  graheetavyo raashtraadraajaabdikah karah .

Yathaa = for instance.    Alpa = small.     Alpalpopam = very little.
Adanti = a leech   Adyam = in the beginning. Vaaryoko = leech.
Vatsa = calf of a cow,    Shatpadaah = bees.  Tathaa = in the same manner.
Graheetavup = to be taken up.  Raashtraadraajaabdikah = Raashtraat
+  raagya + abdikah.   Raashtrat = kingdom's.    Raagyaa, = King
Aabdikah = yearly   Karah = tax, toll.

i,e,     For instance  a leech and a honey bee, a calf of a cow, all  suck up
their food in very small quantities (from the blood of humans, milk from
cow and nectar of flowers respectively) in the same manner the King (or
a Ruler) should obtain tax from the citizens  in very small quantities.
Because if he takes away all their earnings as taxes and there is no capital
left with them from where will they earn any interest ?

(In India after getting independence from British Rule, the tax regime was
so harsh that its cumulative effect was 97% of the total income of a person.
As a result there was widespread evasion of taxes and a parallel economy
termed as Black Money grew up and had devastating effect on the Country's
economy.  After 1991 some reforms were made in the Tax structure but still
tax evasion is rampant. as the advice enshrined in the above shloka was
willfully ignored by our rulers.)

Today's Subhashita.

Nocchinyaddyadaatmano moolam pareshaam chaatitrushnayaaan = .
Ucchindyaadaatmano  moolamaatmaanam taamshcha peedayan.

Na = not.    Ucchindya = dewstrou.    Aatmano = self.    Moolam =
base, source.    Pareshqaam = others (the citizens)    Cha = and
Ati= too much.    Trushnayaa = greed.   Peedayan = oppression

i.e.    It is proper for the King not to oppress the citizens by imposing
excessive tax on them driven by his greed , He should also not invite
trouble for himself , by not imposing any tax, because by doing so he
not only destroys the very foundation of his kingdom but also causes
harm to the citizens,

(The author of the "Manusmriti" has discussed in great detail  various
principles of taxation and even the  quantum  of tax to be imposed.
The above shloka gives just a glimpse of  his wisdom.)

Today's Subhashita.

Teshaamarthe niyunjeeta shooraandakshaankulodgataan.
Shucheenaakarakarmaante bheerunantarrniveshane.

Teshaam = to thiose.    Arthe = departments relating to commerce and industry)
Niyunjeeta =  should be appointed.    Shooraan = brave.  Dakshaan = experts.
kulodgataan = belonging to illustrious families.    Shucheenaa =  honest, unsullied
persons.  Karakarmaant = expert in management.   Bheerum =  timid persons .
Antarniveshane = appointed  elsewhere.

(For the last two weeks I have been posting 'shlokas' from 'Manusmriti' dealing
with the qualities that a Ruler must have and how he should administer his kingdom.
Although it has become fashionable to criticize this treatise, the wisdom dispensed
therein is still very much valid as can be seen by the  recent scandals in the Ministries
of coal and telecommunications and other departments,termed as 'lucrative postings'.

i.e.   The King (or the Ruler) should appoint Ministers in the Departments dealing
with sources of income  like mines , export -import etc) only such persons who
are brave,  born in an illustrious family, honest and well versed in their dealing with
others, and those who are timid may be posted  in other less important Departments.
