गुणी गुणं वेत्ति न वेत्ति निर्गुणो Guni gunam vetti na vetti nirgunah
बली बलं वेत्ति न वेत्ति निर्बलः Bali balam vetti na vetti nirbalah
पिको वसन्तस्य गुणं न वायसः Piko vasantasya gunam na vaayash
करी च सिंहस्य बलं न मूषकः Kari cha simhasya balam na mooshakh.
i.e. Only a person having virtues appreciates the virtues of others and not a person who has no virtues. Similarly, a powerful person appreciates the true worth of having power and not a weak person. When Spring season sets in , it is the nightingale and not a crow , which appreciates the bounties of the Spring season. Likewise, an elephant and not a mouse, knows the strength of a lion.
Guni = a virtuous person. Gunam = virtues. Vetti = knows, appreciates, judges.
Bali = a powerful person. Balam = power, strength. Nirbal = without power, a weak person. Pika = nightingale (koel in Hindi)- a singing bird, resembling in outwardly appearance with a crow. Vasant = Spring season. Vaayasa = a crow
Kari = an elephant. Simha = a lion. Mooshak = a mouse.
