अधमाः धनमिच्छन्ति धनं मानं च मध्यमाः
उत्तमाः मानमिच्छन्ति मानो हि महताम धनम्
Adhmaah dhanmichchanti dhanam maanam cha madhyamaah
uttmaah maanmichchanti maano hi mahtaam dhanam.
i.e. (There are three categories of people) .People of lowest category crave only for wealth, those of middle or average category crave for both wealth and respect, whereas people of highest category desire only respect and recognition, because it is the highest form of wealth for them.
Adhma = a person of lowest category . Dhan = wealth
Ichchanti = desire, an earnest longing or wish. (Dhan + Ichchanti = Dhanmichchanti)
Madhyamaah = midway between extremes, average or ordinary.
Maan = respect and recognition by the society. Uttamah =best category.
Mahtaam = supreme, highest position through achievements.
(In our every day life we observe that those persons whom the society really adores are never rich monetarily e.g. Mother Teressa and Mahatma Gandhi. For persons like them selfless service to the mankind is supreme and this they never do to get name and fame.)
