काव्यप्रपञ्चचन्चु रचयति काव्यं न सारविद्भवति |
तरवः फलानि सुवते विन्दति सारं मतङ्गसमुदायः ||
Kaavyaprapanchchanchu rachayati kaavym na saarvidbhavanti
taravh phalaani suvate vindati saaram matangsamudaayah.
Kaavyaprapanchchampu = Kaavya +prapanch=chanchu. Kaavya =poetry.
Prapanch = ludicrous ,verbose. Chanchu = beak. Rachayati = composes.
Na = not . Saaravidbhavati =Saarvid + bhavati. Saarvid = of substance or value.
Bhawanti = becomes. Taravh = trees. Phalaani = fruits. Suvate = grant, produce.
Vindati = gets, acquires Saaram = destroy. Matangsamudaayah = Matang + Samudayah Matang =elephant Samudayah = group, a herd.
i.e. A ludicrous and verbose poetry can never have any substance and value and is like wild fruits grown on a tree which are ultimately consumed and destroyed by a herd of wild elephants.
(Through this Subhashit the author emphasised the fact that only meaningful poetry is appreciated by knowledgeable and discerning persons. Ludicrous and verbose poetry is like wild fruits (unfit for human consumption) grown in a forest, which are ultimately consumed and destroyed by a herd of wild elephants.)
