पराचः कामाननुयन्ति बाला-
-स्ते मृत्योर्यन्ति विततस्य पाशम् |
अथ धीरा अमृतत्वं विदित्वा
ध्रुवमध्रुवेष्विह न प्रार्थयन्ते. || - कठोपनिषद
Paraachh kaamaananuyanti baalaa-
-ste mrutyoryanti vitatsya paasham.
Atha dheeraa amrutatvam viditwaa
Dhruvamadhruveshviha na praarthyante.
Parachh = turned away from.. Kaamaananuyanti = Kaamaan + anunayanti. Kaaman = sensuality, sexual love. Anunayanti = being engrossed, Baalaa = ignorant or less educated persons, childish. Te = they. mrutyoryaanit = Mrutyoh yaanti. Mrutyo = death. Yaanti = fall into. Vitatasya = broadly spread out. Paasham = noose, trap. Atha = now, however.
Dheeraa= righteous and knowledgeable persons. Amrutatvam = immortality.
Viditvaa = knowing. Dhruvamadhruveshviha = Dhruva +adhruveshu + iha. Dhruva = stable
eternal. Adhruva = unstable short lived. Iha = this world. Na = not. Prarthayante = pray for, yearn for.
i.e. Ignorant and thoughtless persons remain engrossed in sensuality and other worldly comforts and fall into the wide-spread noose of death , whereas righteous and knowledgeable persons knowing very well that nothing is immortal in this world, never crave for ephemeral and transient things in this world.
