लक्ष्मीवन्तो न जानन्ति प्रायेण परवेदनाम् |
शेषे धराभरक्लान्ते शेते नारायणः सुखम् ||
Lakshmivanto na jaanantipraayena paravedanaam.
Sheshe dharabharklaante shete Naarayanh sukham.
Lakshmivanto = Persons who have the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi i.e.wealthy persons. Na = not. Jaananti = know, feel. Praayena = most probably. Paravedanaam = Par+vedanaam. Para =another person. Vedanaam = agony, pain. Sheshe = the name of the mythological multi-headed serpent, whose coil is used by God Vishnu as a couch, with Goddess Lakshmi ,his consort , in attendance. The Earth is supposed to rest on the hood of Shesh. Dharaabharaklaante = Dhara+bharaklaant. Dhara = the Earth we live in. Bharaklaant = tired by bearing the weight of the Earth on its forehead. Shete = sleeps. Narayana = another name of God Vishnu. Sukham = happily.
i.e. Persons having the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi i.e. wealthy persons, most probably oblivious or know nothing about the agony and pain of other persons Even God Narayana, the consort of Goddess Lakshmi , sleeps .happily over the coil of Shesh Naag, totally oblivious about its tiredness due to continuously bearing the weight of the Earth on its hood.
(This Subhashit is an example of using the simile of Lord Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi (the symbol of wealth) in a lighter vein to criticise the tendency among rich persons to remain immune towards miseries and suffering of poor people in the society .)
