आदौ तन्वो बृहन्मध्या विस्तारिण्यः पदे पदे |
यायिन्यो न निवर्तन्ते सतां मैत्रयः सरित्समा || - महासुभषितसंग्रह (4748)
अर्थ - सज्जन और विद्वान् व्यक्तियों से मित्रता एक सरिता (नदी) के
समान होती है जो कि प्रारम्भ में एक कन्या की तरह छरहरे वदन वाली और
मध्यावस्था में हृष्ट पुष्ट तथा आकार में सतत वृद्धि प्राप्त करने वाली और
सदैव आगे बढते हुए कभी नहीं रुकती है |
Aadsau vrahanmadhyaa vistaarinyah pade pade.
Yaayinyo na nivartante sataam maitryah saritsamaa.
Aadau = initially, in the beginning. Tanvo = slim, slender
or a delicate woman.. Vruhanmadhyaa = vruhat _madhyaa.
Vruhat = large. Madhyaa = in the middle, a young woman.
Vistaarinyah = mighty, large, great. Pade pade = everywhere,
again and again. Yaayinyo = travelling, moving. Na = not.
Nivartante = ceases, turning back. Sataam = noble and righteous
persons. Maitryah = friendship. Saritsamaa = sarit + samaa.
Sarit = a river. Samaa = equivalent to.
i.e. Friendship with noble and righteous persons is like a river, which
is initially slim and delicate like a young girl and grows in size again and
again in the middle stage like a young woman and always moves forward
and never turns back.
