Today's Subhaashita.

गौरवं  प्राप्यते दानात् न च वित्तस्य  सञ्चयात  |
स्थिति उच्चैः पयोदानां पयोधीनां  अधः स्थितिः || - संस्कृत सुभाषितानि

भावार्थ -    धन संपत्ति का दान करने से ही  समाज में सम्मान और प्रसंशा
प्राप्त होती है  न कि उसको मात्र  सञ्चय करने से |   ऐसे दानदाताओं की
समाज में उच्च स्थिति उसी प्रकार होती है जिस प्रकार  वर्षा जल से भरपूर
बादल  आकाश में  ऊंचाई  पर स्थित होते  हैं और  खारे जल से भरे हुए
सागर पृथ्वी  पर नीचे स्थित होते हैं |

(इस सुभाषित में कंजूस व्यक्तियों की तुलना खारे जल से भरे हुए सागर से और
दानशील व्यक्तियों की तुलना जल से भरपूर बादलों  से की गयी है |  बादल
अपना सारा जल प्राणिमात्र की  आवश्यकता की पूर्ति  के लिये पृथ्वी पर बरसा
देते हैं  और सागर खारे जल  का मात्र संग्रहण ही करते हैं | इस उपमा के द्वारा  
दान की महत्ता को प्रतिपादित किया गया है | )

Gauravam praapyate daanaat na cha vittasya sanchayaat.
Sthiti ucchaih payodaanaam payodheenaam adhh sthitih.

Gauravam = admiration, respectability.   Praapyate = achieved.
Daanaat = by giving away wealth as charity.   Na = not.  Cha = and.
Vittasya = wealth's     Sanchayaat = by hoarding.   Sthiti = position,
situation.     Ucchaih = higher, lofty.   Payodaanaam = rain bearing
clouds.    Payodheenaam = oceans.   Adhh = low, below..

i.e.     Admiration and respect  ability in the society is achieved only
by giving away wealth as charity and not by hoarding it. The position
of such donors is always high like a rain bearing cloud in the sky,
unlike the low position of the oceans on the Earth.

(By the use of the similes of a cloud for a philanthropic person, and
the ocean for a rich but miser person, the author of the Subhashita has
thus emphasized the importance of distribution of wealth for the benefit
of  the society.)
