एको लोभो महाग्राहो लोभात्पापं प्रवर्तते |
ततो पापादधर्माप्तिस्ततो दुःखं प्रवर्तते || - महासुभषितसंग्रह
भावार्थ -अकेला लोभ ही मनुष्य को एक ग्राह (मगर) के समान
जकड लेता है और उसके कारण वह पापकर्म करने की ओर प्रव्रत्त
होता है | तत्पश्चात वह् अधार्मिक कार्यों में लिप्त हो जाता है जिस
के फलस्वरूप वह् अनेक दुःखो में घिर जाता है |
Eko = one. Lobho = greed. Mahaagraaho = a big crocodile,
morbid affection. Lobhaat = due to greed. Paapam = sins.
Pravartate = results in. Tatp = thereafter. Paapaat + due to
Sins. Adhamra = immoral behaviour, Aaptih = gains,comes.
Duhkha = miseries, sorrow.
i.e. Morbid affection towards greed alone grips a person like
a crocodile, as a result of which he behaves immorally and commits
various sinful sinful acts and consequently his life becomes full of
miseries.
