न हायनैर्न पलितैर्न वित्तेन न बन्धुभिः |
ऋषयश्चक्रिरे धर्मं योSनूचानः स नो महान् ||
मनुस्मृति (२/१५४)
भावार्थ - अधिक आयु होने , केश श्वेत हो जाने , विपुल संपत्ति
तथा बन्धु बान्धव होने मात्र से कोई व्यक्ति महान् नहीं हो जाता
है | ऋषियों ने उसी व्यक्ति को श्रेष्ठ और महान उद्घोषित किया
है जो वेद वेदांगों तथा शास्त्रों का ज्ञाता हो |
Na haayanairna palitairn vittena na bandhubhih.
Rishiyashchakire dharmam yonoochaanah sa no mahaan,
Na = not. Haayanairna = haayanaih + na. Haayanaih =
years (reference to old age ) Palitairna= palitaih + na.
Palitaih = grey hairs. Vittena = wealth. Bandhubhih =
relatives. Rishayaschaakrire = rishayah + chakrire.
Rishayah ==sages. Cakrire = proclaimed. Dharmam =
Religion, religious austerity. Yonoochaanah = Yo +
anoochaanah. Yo = who Anoochaanah = a person
well versed in Vedas and scriptures. Sa = he, Mahaan=
great, most respected.
i.e. A person does not become great and respectable simply
being aged , having grey hairs, very rich and having many
friends and relatives. Old sages have proclaimed that only a
person well versed in Vedas and scriptures can be termed as a
great and most respectable person.
