अज्ञतया प्रेम्णा वा चूडामणिमाकलय्य काचमणिम् |
नृपतिर्वहेत शिरसा तेनाSसौ नह्यनर्घ्यमणिः ||

भावार्थ - अज्ञान वश या प्रेम भावना के कारण यदि कोई राजा एक
साधारण कांच की नकली मणि को चूडामणि समझ कर अपने सिर पर
धारण कर लेता है तो फिर भी लोग उसे अमूल्य मणि ही समझते हैं |
(यह सुभाषित भी एक अन्योक्ति है | इस का तात्पर्य यह है कि महान
व्यक्तियों के संसर्ग मे साधारण व्यक्ति भी सम्मान प्राप्त कर लेते हैं | )
Agyatayaa premnaa vaa choodaamanimaakalyya kaachamanim.
Nrupatirvahate shirasaa tenaasau nahyyanavyarmanih.
Agyatayaa = without knowing, being unaware. Premnaa =
out of love or affection. Vaa = or. Choodaamaanimaakalyya=
choodaamanim + aakalyya. Choodaamanim = a jewel worn by
men and women on the top of the head. Aakalyya = supposing.
Kachamanim = an artificial jewel made of ordinary glass.
Nrutatirvahate = nrupatih + vahate. Nrupati = a king. Vahate =
carries, wears. Shirasaa = on the head. Tenaasau = therefore .
Nahyanavyarmanih = nahyan = put on , tie. Arghyamanih = as a
precious jewel.
i.e. Being totally unaware or out of love or affection if a king ties
an artificial jewel of ordinary glass on his head, thinking it to be a
'Choodaamani', people still consider it as a precious jewel..
(The above Subhashita is an allegory. The underlying idea is that
in the company of great and noble persons, even ordinary persons
enjoy respect and attention. )
