To day's Subhashita.

laalayet panch varshaani dash varshaani taadayet
Praapyetu shodashe varshe putram mitravadaacharet

i.e.  One should up bring a child with love and utmost care during the initial five years, followed by maintaining strict discipline during the next ten years. After the child reaches sixteenth year of his age he should be treated like a friend.

Laalan = up bringing a child with love and care.
Taadan = The literal meaning of 'tadan' is beating, but here it means maintaining strict discipline and not hesitating to enforce it with sternness.
Mitra = a friend .                    Aacharet = treated as.

    Sir got different meaning somewhere else. Which one is coorect?

  3. My observation is today's children are treated like friends as soon as the start going to school. Because they are well versed in use of computers and have more knowledge than parents.. Days have changed.

  4. Tadna is not being strict with the child - ( do not follow Spare the rod and spoil the child) instead develop discipline by being rational, reason out why something is right or wrong, only then after a child reaches 16 you can become a friend lest you may lose bonding with the child. It is a great parenting tip.
