In yesterday's Subhashit there was mention of 'Dharma',which differentiates mankind from beasts. Dharma translated as Religion does not convey its true meaning, as the concept of Dharma in Sanskrit is very broad. Here is a Subhashit, which outlines ten attributes of Dharma.
धृतिः क्षमा दमोsस्तेयं शौचमिन्द्रियनिग्रहः
धीर्विद्या सत्यमक्रोधो दशकं धर्मं लक्षणम
Dhratih kshmaa damosteyem shauchmindriyanigrahh
Dheervidyaa satyamakrodho dashakam Dharma lakshnam.
Patience, forgiveness, courage, not indulging in theft, cleanliness of body, control over sensory organs, intelligence, being learned, truthfulness and control over anger, these are the ten attributes of Dharma,
(A person , who possesses these qualities is called Dharmik i.e.steeped in Dharma
Dhriti = patience. Kshmaa = forgiveness. Dama = Courage, punishing some one for his wrongdoings.
Asteya= not indulging in theft. (a = not . steya = theft) Shauch = keeping body clean (body hygiene)
Indriya nigrah = control over sensory organs. Dhee = intelligence. Vidyaa = Learning,
Satya = truthfullness . Akrodha = not being angry, cool headed.
(A+ Krodha) -A = not Krodha = anger Dashakam = ten (10)
(By adding the prefix 'A' before a word, just like 'un' or 'in' in English, a word denotes its opposite meaning)
