To day's Subhashit

तैलाद रक्षेत जलाद रक्षेत रक्षेत शिथल्  बन्धनात्
मूर्ख हस्ते न दातव्यं एवं वदति पुस्तकं

Tailaad rakshet jalaad rakshet,rakshet shithala bandhanaat
Moorkah haste na daatvyam evam vadati pustakam

i.e.    Books tell (expect from) their owners that to maintain them properly, one should protect them from being spoiled by oil and water.and also ensure that they are not loosely bound. But under no circumstances they should be given  to a foolish person.

Taila =oil.       Jal = water.       Rakshed = protected  from.         Shithil = loose.     Bandhan = binding
Shithil Bandhanaat = from loose binding. ( During ancient times before the invention of paper, books were written on the bark of a tree called 'Bhoj' and a page of such bark was called 'Bhoj patra'. The pages were not bound or stitched  as is done. now a days and were stacked loose and covered with a piece of cloth and bound with a string to protect the entire book containing many pages. Old manuscripts are still kept in this manner)
Hasta = hand.          Datvyam = given.         Vadati = tells             Pustakam = A book or a manuscript.
