अल्पाSक्षरं रमणीयं यः कथयति निश्चितं स खलु वाग्मी |
बहुवचनमल्पसारं यः कथयति विप्रलापी सः ||
Alpaaksharam ramaneeyam yah kathayati nischitm sa khalu vaagmee.
Bahuvachanmalpasaaram yh kathayati vipralaapi sah.
Alpaaksharam = Alpa + akshram. Alpa = few, little. Aksharam = words, a letter of the alphabet.
Ramaneeyam = delightful, pleasant. Yah = who. Kathayati = says , tells.
Nishchitam = surely, definitely. Sa = he. Khalu = surely, indeed. Vaagmee = eloquent speaker.
Bahuvachanmalpasaarm = Bahu + vachan+ alpa+ saaram. Bahu = many. Vachan = speaking.
Alpa = easily, a little Saaram = essence, essential, Vaachayati = speaks, pronounces.
Vipralaapi = a prattler, one who talks much but idly.
i.e. A person who expresses himself (speaks) pleasantly and forcefully in a few words is definitely an eloquent speaker, whereas a person who talks much but idly (without any sense) is called a prattler.
(Through this subhashit the author has praised the orators who can sway the minds of public by their eloquent speech. Eloquence means the power of expressing emotions or thoughts in words that impress or move other people.)
