To day's Subhashit.

वाक् चक्षुः  श्रोत्रलयं  लक्ष्मीः कुरुते नरस्य को दोषः |
गरलसहोदरजाता  न   मारयति  यच्च  तच्चित्रम्   ||

Vaak chakshuh shrotralaym lakshmeeh kurute narasya ko doshah.
Garalsahodarajaataa na maarayati yaccha tacchitram.

Vaak= speech.    Chakshuh = eyes.    Shrotralayam = shrotra + layam.     Shrotra= hearing.
Layam = inactive, indifferent.hearing.      Narasya = a man's      Ko =  what.
Dosha = fault, mistake.      Garalsahodarjaata = Garal + sahodarjaataa.     Garal = poison.
sahodarajaataa = born of the same womb.**     Na = not.     Maarayati = kills.      Yaccha =Yat + Cha .     Tacchitram = tat + Chitram.  Yat  and Tat = these are prefixes denoting reason for a thing, 'this' and 'that' respectively.     Cha = and, besides.       Chitram = surprising.

i.e.           If the bounty of Goddess Lakshmi makes a person filthy rich and he becomes indifferent and oblivious of feeling, seeing and hearing ( the miseries of other people around him), it is not due to his fault.  Lakshmi being the sister (born of the same womb) of  'Garal' , the most potent poison**, it is really surprising that she does not kill him.

**  In Hindu mythology there is the legend of 'Samudra Manthan' i.e.churning of the Ocean by the Gods and Demons. They used the mountain 'Meru' as a churn and 'Vasuki 'serpent as the rope.  By the churning of the ocean many objects were brought from the depth of the ocean, such as, 'Amrit' the nectar that makes a person immortal, Goddess Lakshmi  and also the most potent poison 'Halaahal', which became a threat to every one.. So to save the humanity Lord Shiva drank it.   As Lakshmi and Halaahal poison, both were the products of the Ocean,  Lakshmi has been termed as 'Sahodarajaata' of  'Garal' .

(Sanskrit literature is full of Subhashits, both in praise and criticism of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, one sided when viewed only in parts, and exhaustive when viewed as a whole. So readers are requested  to enjoy them accordingly.  Competition between Goddess Saraswati and Lakshmi is a favourite theme
of Sanskrit poets and should be enjoyed accordingly,)
