To day's Subhashit.

वनाति दहतो वह्निः सखा भवति मारुतः |

स   एव  दीप  नाशाय  कृशे  कस्यास्ति  सौहृदं       ||

 

Vanaani Dahato Vanhaih Sakhaa Bhawati Maarutah:
Sa Aiw Deep Naashaaya , Krishey Kasyaasti Sauhradam.

 

Vanaani =  forests.    Dahato = burns.      vanhi = fire.      Sakhaa = friend.     Bhavati = becomes.    Marutah = wind.

Sa = it.     Eva = really.     Deep = an  earthen oil lamp.      Naashaaya = extinction, extinguishes the lamp.

Krushe = weak   and thin.     Kasyaasti = kasya + asti.     Kasya =  who.      Asti = has.    Sauhrudam = friendship, affection.

i.e.     While a fire rages in a forest during that process a  blowing wind provides help as a friend, but the same wind extinguishes a  burning earthen lamp.  Really, no body wants friendship with weak and poor persons.

 

(Through this Subhashit the author highlights the fact that there is a tendency among people to  befriend powerful persons and avoid friendship with a poor and weak person. Instead of befriending  the poor they rather harm them, as is the case of a blowing wind which helps a raging fire and extinguishes a lamp.)
