To day's Subhashita.

मस्त्यादयो न जानन्ति नीरक्षीर विवेचनम्  |
प्रसिद्धिरेव  हंसस्य  यशः  पुण्यैरवाप्यते       ||

Matsyaadayo na jaananti neeraksheer vivechanam.
Prisiddhireva hamsasya yashh punyairavaapyate.

Matsyaadayo = .various species of fish.     Na = not.      Jaananti = know.     Neeraksheer = Neer +ksheer.
Neer = water.     Ksheer = milk.      Vivechanam = critical treatment, investigation,  examination.
Prisidhireva = Prisiddhi + aiva     Prasiddhi = fame, accomplishment.    Aiva = really.   Hansasya = a swan's.
Yash = fame.    Punyairawaapsyati =  punyaih +avaapsyate.    Punya = moral and religious merit, reverence.
Avapyate = obtains, gets.

( In Sanskrit literature there is the legend of  Swans having the special ability of separating milk from water,which is termed as 'Neer Ksheer Vivechan", which is referred to in this Subhashita.)

i.e.    All the species of fish do not have the ability of separating milk from water, which the Swans possess.Only for this reason Swans are revered and are famous for this faculty.

(The idea behind this Subhashita is that when a person has some special ability or faculty, then only he is admired by people and gets name and fame.)
