उत्तमैः सह सांगत्यं पण्डितैः सह संकथा |
अलुब्धैः सह मित्रत्वं कुर्वाणो नावसीदति ||
अर्थ - यदि कोई व्यक्ति सज्जन व्यक्तियों की संगति में रहता है , और विद्वान् व्यक्तियों से विचारों का आदान प्रदान करता है, तथा अलोभी व्यक्तियों से मित्रता करता है , तो उसे कभी भी अवसादित नहीं होना पडता है |
(अवसाद एक ऐसी मानसिक स्थिति होती है जिस में व्यक्ति अपने विगत में किये गये कार्यों के फलस्वरूप कष्ट भोगने को बाध्य हो जाता है | परोक्ष रूप से इस सुभाषित में वर्णित व्यक्तियों के विपरीतआचरण करने वाले ,अर्थात दुर्जन और नीच व्यक्तियों के संसर्ग में न आने की चेतावनी दी गयी है )

Uttmaih - reference to honourable and righteous persons. Saha = together with,
Saangatyaa = in the company of. Panditaih = knowledgeable and learned persons.
Samkathaa = conversation or interaction with. Alubdhaaih= persons who are not greedy.
Mitratvam = friendship. Kurvaano = doing. Naavaseedati = na + avaseedati..
Na = not. Avaseedati = let down, frustrated.
i.e. If a person keeps the company of honourable and righteous men, or engages himself in conversation or interaction with knowledgeable persons, or makes friendship with persons who arfe not greedy, he will
never be let down or get frustrated.
