Today's Subhashita.

अपि संपूर्णतायुक्तैः कर्तव्या सुहृदो बुधैः |
नदीशः परिपूर्णोऽपि चन्द्रोदयमपेक्षते      ||

अर्थ -     बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति हर दृष्टि से संपन्न और संपूर्ण  होते हुए भी अन्य
योग्य व्यक्तियों से मित्रता करना अपना कर्तव्य समझते हैं |  देखो ना !  समस्त
नदियों का स्वामी  समुद्र भी यद्यपि सदैव पूरी तरह् भरा रहता है, उसे भी और
अधिक उठने के लिये चन्द्रमा के उदय होने की अपेक्षा होती है |

(इस सुभाषित में चंद्रमा के गुरुत्वाकर्षण से  समुद्र में ज्वार आने से उसके  जल
स्तर में वृद्धि को एक उपमा के रूप में प्रयुक्त किया गया है | इसी प्रकार हर तरह्  से
संपूर्ण व्यक्ति भी यदि अच्छे लोगों से मित्रता करते हैं तो उस से उन्हें लाभ ही
होता है | यही इस सुभाषित का तात्पर्य है |)
 
Api sampoornataayukteh kartavyaa suhrudo budhaih.
Nadeeshah paripoornopi chandrodayamapekshate.

Api  = even.     sampoornataa = perfection, complete in all respects.
Yuktaih = endowed with.    Kartavyaa = duty  .    Suhrudo = friend.
Budhaih = learned persons.    Nadeeesh = the Ocean.   Paripoornopi =
paripoorn +  api.  .       Paripoorna = completely filled with.
Chandrodayamapekshate = chandrodayam + apekshete.
Chandrodayam = rising of the Moon in the sky.  
Apekshate = expects, needs.

i.e.      Learned person endowed with perfection in all respects, still consider
it their duty to befriend other good persons.   Look !  how the Ocean needs
the Moon to rise in the sky for further increasing its level.

( In the above Subhashita the author has skillfully used the simile of the
phenomenon of creation of tides in the Ocean due to the gravitational pull
of the Moon/  If learned men befriend other noble persons, they will
definitely benefit from such friendship in the long run, even if they may
not be in need of any help.)
