पात्रविशेषे न्यस्तं गुणान्तरं व्रजति शिल्पमाधातुः |
जलमिव समुद्रशुक्तौ मुक्ताफलतां पयोदस्य ||
अर्थ - किसी विशेष योग्यता वाले पात्र (व्यक्ति या वस्तु ) से किसी अन्य वस्तु
का संपर्क होने पर ही उसके रूप और गुणों में परिवर्तन संभव होता है जैसा कि बादल
से बरसे जल की बूंद जब एक साधारण समुद्र की सीपी के अन्दर प्रविष्ट होती है तो
वह् कालान्तर में मोती बन जाती है |
(प्राचीन काल में यह् मान्यता थी कि वर्षा की बूंदें जब समुद्र में उत्पन्न सीपियों के
अन्दर विशेष परिस्थिति में प्रवेश करती हैं तो कालान्तर में वह् मोती बन जाती हैं |
इसी तथ्य को एक उपमा के रूप मे प्रयुक्त कर यह् प्रतिपादित किया गया है कि गुण
ग्रहण करने की विशेष क्षमता वाले सामान्य व्यक्ति जब गुणी व्यक्तियों के संपर्क में
आते हैं तो वे भी गुणवान हो जाते है | )
Paatravisheshe nyastam gunaantaram vrajati shilpamaadhaatuh.
Jalamiva samudrashuktau muktaaphalataam payodasya.
Paatra = object, receptacle. Visheshe = special. Nyastam = possessing.
Gunaantaram = change in quality or merits. Vrajati = obtains.
Shilpamaadhaatuh =Shilpm +aadhatuh. Shilpm = artistic refinement.
Aadhaatuh = takes place. Jalamia = jalam + iva. Jalam = water.
Iva = like. Samudrashuktau = sea shells. Muktaaphalataam =
Muktaaphalataam = pearls. Payodasya = a rain bearing cloud's.
i.e. Only in an object (or a person) possessing some special merits, a complete
change occurs in its (his) qualities and appearance by coming into contact with
another object (person), like the rain drops entering into ordinary sea shells
ultimately turning them into pearl bearing shells.
(In the past it was believed that when rain drops enter inside ordinary sea shells
during a particular auspicious time, they become pearl bearing shells.This legend
has been used as a simile to indirectly emphasise that a complete change in the
merits can occur in only those persons who are endowed with special qualities of
acquiring virtues by coming in contact with virtuous and knowledgeable persons.)
