असंख्याः परदोषज्ञा गुणज्ञा अपि केचन |
स्वयमेव स्वदोषज्ञा विद्यन्ते यदि पञ्चषाः || -महासुभषितसंग्रह (३६१०)
अर्थ - समाज में अन्य व्यक्तियों के दोषों को जानने मे कुशल व्यक्ति तो
असंख्य (जिनकी गिनती करना भी संभव न हो ) उपलब्ध होते हैं, पर गुणों के
पारखी बहुत ही कम उपलब्ध होते हैं | अपने दोषों को स्वयं जानने वाले व्यक्ति
हों भी तो शायद पांच या छः ही मिलेंगे |
Asankhyaah paradoshagyaa gunagyaa api kechana.
Svayameva svadoshagyaa vidyante yadi Panchashaah.
Asamkhyaah = innumerable. Paradoshagyaa = knowing other
persons' faults. Gunagyaa = knowing the virtues. Api = even.
Kechana =some people. Svayameva = himeslf. Svadoshagya =
knowing one's own defects, Vidyante = exist. Yadi = if.
Panchashaah = (hardly) five or six.
i.e. There are innumerable persons in society who pose themselves
as experts in detecting the shortcomings and faults in others, but hardly
a few persons exist who are experts in recognising the virtues of others.
As regards persons who know their own shortcomings, if such persons
do exist their number may be hardly five or six.
