Today's Subhashita.

असतां  सह् सङ्गेन  को न  यात्यधमां  गतिः |
पयोSपि शौण्डनी हस्ते मद्यमित्याभिधीयते ||

अर्थ -       दुर्जनों की संगति में भला कौन दुर्गति नहीं पाता है ?  देखो न ,
एक शराब विक्रेता के हाथों मे दूध से भरे हुए पात्र को भी लोग शराब से भरा
हुआ ही समझते हैं |

Asataam saha sangena ko na yaatyadhamaam gatih.
Payopi shaundanee haste madyamityaabhidheeyate.

Asataam = persons who are not righteous and venerable, i.e. wicked
and malicious persons.    Saha = in the company of, together with.
Sangena = association with.     Ko = who.    Na = not    Yaatyadhamaam=
Yaati +adhamaam.       Yaati = gets.     Adhamaam = worst.     Gatih =
position.       Payopi = payo + api.      Payo = milk.     Api = even.
Shaundanee = a seller  of  liquor.    Haste = in the hands of.
Madyamityaabhidheeyate = Madyam +iti+abhidheeyate.      Madyam =
liquor.     Iti =  it.      Abhidheeyate = construed as.

i.e.         Who can not get maligned and degenerate to the lowest position in
society by keeping the company of wicked and malicious persons ?
Just see.  how  a jar full of milk in the hands of a bartender is construed by
people as filled with liquor.
