अहिंसा सत्यमस्तेयं शौचमिन्द्रियनिग्रहः |
एतं सामासिकं धर्मं चातुर्वर्ण्यैः ब्रवीन्मनुः || -महासुभषितसंग्रह (4090)
अर्थ - अहिंसा, सत्यवादिता(झूठ न बोलना ) , चोरी न करना, तथा
इन्द्रियनिग्रह (मन और शरीर के उद्वेगों को वश मे रखना ) ये संक्षेप मे
धर्म के प्रमुख तत्व महर्षि मनु द्वारा कहे गये हैं |
(सनातन धर्म के अन्तर्गत महर्षि मनु द्वारा भारतीय समाज को चार वर्गों मे
ब्राह्मण , क्षत्रिय, वैश्य और शूद्र के रूप में विभाजित किया गया है और उनके
कर्तव्यों का वर्णन मनुस्मृति ग्रन्थ में उपलब्ध है | )

etam saamaasikam dharmam chaaturvarnyaih braveenmanuh.
Ahimsaa = non violence, harmlessness. Satyamasteyam = satyam +
asteyam. Satyam = truthfulness. Asteyam = not stealing.
Shauchamindriyanigrahh = shaucham +indriyanigrahh. Shaucha =
cleanliness, honesty. Indriyanigraha = restraint over sensory organs,
chastity. Etam = these. Saamaasikam = briefly. Dharmam =
religion, religious merits. Chaaturvarnaih = four castes namely
Braamhana, kshatriya, vaishya and shoodra, in which the Hindu
Society is divided according to the tenets of Hindu Religion.
Braveenmanuh= Braveet +manuh. Braveet = proclaimed.
Manuh = the name of a sage considered as the progenitor of human
race, who codified the rules governing the Hindu Society now available

i.e. Briefly stated the main tenets of Hindu Religion as codified by
Manu, the progenitor of Human race, are (i) non violence (ii) truthfulness
(iii) not stealing any thing and (iv) chastity and restraint /control over
