आचारः खलु कर्तव्यः प्राणैः कण्ठगतैरापि |
आचारैः शुध्यते देहो वस्त्रं क्षारोदकैरिव || - महासुभषितसंग्रह (४४२४)
अर्थ - सामाजिक और धार्मिक मान्यताओं द्वारा निर्धारित नियमों
का अनुपालन निश्चय पूर्वक आसन्न मृत्यु की स्थिति होने पर भी करना
परम कर्तव्य है क्यों कि ऐसा करने से यह मानव शरीर (और मन ) उसी प्रकार
शुद्ध और पवित्र रहता है जिस प्रकार क्षार युक्त जल (वर्तमान संदर्भ मे डिटर्जेण्ट
पाउडर या साबुन) से वस्त्र शुद्ध हो जाते हैं |

Aachaaraih shudhjyate dehao vastram kshaarodakairiva.
Aachaarah = well established rules of good conduct. Khalu =
certainly, assiduously.. Kartavyah = duty, what should be done.
Praanaih = breathe of life. Kanthagatairapi = kanthagataih +
api. Kanthagataih = being at the throat i,e, facing the risk of
imminent death, Api = even, Shudhyate = be cleansed or
purified. Deho = human body. Vastram = clothes,
Ksdhaarodakairiva = kshaarodakaih + iva. Kshaarodakaih =
kshaara +udakaih + iva. Kshaar = alkali Udak =water..
Kshaarodak = alkaline water (a detergent or a soap in modern
parlance). iva = like a.
i.e. One should assiduously follow the well established rules of
good social behaviour even on the face of imminent danger to life,
because by doing so the human body (and mind) become cleansed
just like clothes on being washed with water containing a detergent.
