आयुर्वर्षशतं नृणां परिमितं रात्रौ तदर्थं गतं
तस्यार्धस्य परस्य चार्धमपरं बालत्व वृद्धत्वयो |
शेषं व्याधि वियोग दुःख सहितं सेवादिभिर्नीयते
जीवे वारितरङ्ग चञ्चलतरे सौख्यं कुतः प्राणिनाम् ||
अर्थ - मनुष्य की आयु एक सौ वर्ष तक ही सीमित रहती है और
उसका आधा भाग रात्रि के रूप (नीद लेने में) व्यतीत हो जाता है | बचे
हुए आधे भाग का आधा (25 वर्ष) बचपन और वृद्धावस्था में व्यतीत हो
जाते हैं और बाकी बचेहुए वर्ष बीमारियों, वियोग , दुःख तथा सेवा आदि में
व्यतीत हो जाते हैं | यह् जीवन जल में उठी हुई तरंगों के समान अत्यन्त
चञ्चल है | अतः प्राणियों को सुख और शान्ति कहां प्राप्त होती है ?

Viyog = separation. Duhkha = sorrow, grief. Sahitam =
tgether with. Sevaadibhih = service etc. Neeyate = passes
over. Jeeve = living. Vaaritarang = waves in water.
Chanchalatare = extremely unsteady. Saukhya = happiness
Kutah = where ? Praaninaam = living beings.
i.e. The life span of men is one hundred years and half of it is
spent as nights ( in sleeping). Half of the remaining (25 years) is
spent in childhood and old age and the remaining 25 years are
spent in fighting diseases, separation, miseries and service, Further,
the expectancy of life is extremely unstable like the waves generated
in water. So where is the happiness in the life of all living beings ?
