हारं वक्षसि केनापि दत्तमज्ञेन मर्कटः |
लेढि जिघ्रति संक्षिप्य करोत्युन्नतमासनम् ||- सुभषितरत्नाकर
अर्थ - एक अज्ञानी बन्दर की छाती (गर्दन) में एक रत्नज
हार्र पहनाने से और कुछ लाभ नहीं होगा | वह उसे पहले चाटेगा, फिर
सूंघ कर उसे तोड कर किसी ऊंचे स्थान पर बैठ जायेगा |
(इस सुभाषित द्वारा प्रकारान्त से यही तथ्य प्रतिपादित किया गया
है कि एक गुणी व्यक्ति ही किसी वस्तु या व्यक्ति का उचित सम्मान
कर सकता है | एक अज्ञानी व्यक्ति इस सुभाषित में वर्णित बन्दर के
समान व्यवहार कर उसका निरादर ही करता है |)
Haaram vakshasi kenaapi dattmasgyena markatah.
Ledhi jighrati samkshipya karottyunnatamaasanam.
Haaram = a necklace. Vakshashi = on the chest.
Kenaapi - whichever, whatever. Dattamagyena =
Dattam + agyena. Dattam = give, put. Agyena =
by ignorance. Markatah = a monkey. Ledhi = lick at.
Jighrati = smell at, Samkshioya = reducing in size by
breaking. Karotyunnatamaasanam = Karoti + unnatam +
aanasam. Karoti = does. Unnatam =. high, elevated.
aasanam = seat.
i.e. If will be of no use to put a necklace studded with gems
around the chest (neck) of a monkey, At first it will lick and
smell it, and thereafter break it and then perch over an elevated
place.
(The underlying idea behind this Subhashita is that only
knowledgeable persons know the true worth of a thing or a person
and duly recognize it. Ignorant persons behave just like the
monkey referred to in this Subhashita.)
