Today's Subhashita.

अहो  कथमसीमेदं हिमनाम विजृम्भते  |

चरत्येव  सहस्रांशौ  धवलं  तिमिरान्तरं  || - महासुभषितसंग्रह (४१२८)

अर्थ -  अहो  !  में कैसे  बताऊं कि  यह  हिमालय पर्वत सूर्योदय  के समय  

तथा रात्रि का अन्धकार दूर होने पर  कितना असीम और धवल  (सीमा 

रहित, चमकदार और स्वर्णिम ) प्रतीत  होता  है |

(हिमाच्छदित हिमालय पर्वत शृङ्खला पर प्रातःकाल सूर्योदय के समय 

जब  उसके शिखरों पर सूर्य की किरणे पडती हैं तो उस समय एक अद्भुत 

दृश्य उपस्थित हो जाता है और ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि पर्वत शिखर स्वर्ण

के बने हैं |  उसी परिस्थिति का वर्णन इस सुभाषित में किया गया है |) 

Aho kathamaseemeda himanaam vijrumbhate .

Charatyeva sahasraamsho dhavalam timiraantaram.

Aho  =  Oh !     Kathamaseemeda = katham +aseem +idam.

Katham = say.     Aseema = unbounded.      Idam = this   

Himanaam = reference to the high snow clad Himalaya Mountain.

Vijrumbhate = appears, spreads out, exhibited.    Charatyeva=

charati + aiva.      Charati = wanders,  rises.    Aiva = of/

Sahasraamsho = the Sun.    Dhavalam = dazzling white

Timiraantaram = timir +antaram.    Timir = darkness,

Antaram =   gap, afterwards

i.e.      Oh !     how to express  the grandeur of the unbounded  

Himalayan Range of mountains at the time of the rising Sun

which removes the darkness of the night and brightens its peak 

with dazzling white light ?

( During Sunrise when the rays of Sun fall on the snow-capped

peaks of Himalayan mountain range, they produce a unique view

and it appears as if the mountains are made of Gold. The author of

the Subhashita expresses his inability to describe this phenomenon. )
