Today's Subhashita.

अहो धनमदान्धस्तु पश्यन्नापि न पश्यति |
यदि पश्यतात्महितं  स  पश्यति  न  संशयः || - महासुभषितसंग्रह (४१५०)

अर्थ -     अहो  !   अपने धन के मद में डूबे  हुए व्यक्ति (अपने चारों ओर
फैली  हुई अव्यवस्था को देखते हुए  भी इस डर से कि उन्हें उसे दूर करने
में सहायता करने हेतु अपना धन व्यय करना पडेगा ) एक अन्धे व्यक्ति
के समान ऐसा व्यवहार करते हैं कि जैसे उन्होंने  कुछ भी नहीं देखा है |
परन्तु यदि कोई ऐसी घटना  हो जो उनके फायदे की हो तो उसे वे अवश्य
ही देखते है | (और तुरन्त  अपने हितों की रक्षा करने के लिये तदनुसार
आचरण करते हैं )|

(इस सुभाषित के  माध्यम  से उन धनी और कंजूस व्यक्तियों की निन्दा
की गयी है जो अपने धन का सदुपयोग  समाज के उत्थान हेतु नहीं करते
हैं | )

Aho dhanamaadaandhastu pashyannaapi na pashyati .
Yadi pashyataatmahitam sa pashyati na smshayah .

Aho = oh !     Dhanamadaandhastu = dhanamada +andhh +tu.
Dhanamadah = pride of money.   Andhah = blinded.   Tu = and, but.
Pashyannaapi= pashyat +na+api     Pashyat = seeing.   Na = not.
Api = even.    Pashyati = sees.     Yadi = if.    Pashyaatmahitam =
Pashyat +aatmahitam.     Aatmahitaam = self- interest. beneficial
to one's self.     Smshayah =  doubt.

(Through this  Subhashit the author has criticised those rich persons
who do not spend  their wealth for  philanthropic purposes.)

i.e.      Oh !    Persons intoxicated  by their wealth ( due to the fear that
they will have to contribute towards the welfare of the society) behave
like a blind person as if they have not seen or are unaware of any thing
around them .   However, if there is any thing  beneficial to them , no
doubt they will surely  see it and act accordingly to protect their interest).
