Today's Subhashita.

शिरसा धार्यमाणोSपि सोमः सौम्येन शम्भुना  |
तथाSपि  कृषतां  धत्ते  कष्टः खलु  पराश्रयः   ||  - सुभाषितरत्नाकर

अर्थ -     भगवान् शिव के द्वारा बडी सौम्यता पूर्वक  चन्द्रमा को अपने
ललाट (सिर) पर धारण किये  जाने पर भी वह् कृश (दुबळा ) हो जाता
है  |  सचमुच दूसरों के ऊपर  आश्रित रहने पर बहुत कष्ट सहना पडता
है |

(चन्द्रमा की कलाओं  के घटने और बढने  से उसके स्वरूप में परिवर्तन
होने की प्रक्रिया को एक उपमा  के रूप में प्रयुक्त कर इस सुभाषित में
अन्य व्यक्तियों एक ऊपर आश्रित रहने वाले व्यक्तियों की मनोदशा
को व्यक्त किया है कि सद्व्यवहार् किये जाने पर भी वे संतुष्ट नहीं  होते
हैं और कष्ट का ही अनुभव करते हैं |

Shirasa dhaaryamaanopi somah saumyenashambhunaa.
Tathaapi krushataam  dhatte kashtah khalu paraashrayah.

Shirasaa = on the head.    Dhaaryamaanopi =  dhaaryamaana+
api.     Dhaaryamaana = being held.    Api = even.   Somah  =
the Moon.    Saumyena = gently.    Shambhunaa = by the God
Shiva.    Thaapi = Tathaa +api.    Tathaa = thus.    Krushataam=
leanness, thinness.   Dhatte = becomes.    Kashtah = difficulties.
Paraashrayah = Para + aashryah.   Para = others.    Ashrayah =
dependence on.

i.e.   In spite of being very well treated by the God Shiva by
gently placing it on his forehead, the Moon still becomes lean
and thin. Truly, it is a very difficult and painful situation to
remain dependent on others.

(In Hindu mythology God Shiva is depicted having a crescent
Moon on his forehead as a decoration.  The waning of the Moon
in such a situation has been used by the author of this Subhashitaas as
a simile to depict the woes of persons dependent on others by saying
that even if they are treated nicely, they still feel depressed.)
