Today's Subhashita.

पञ्चमेSहनि षष्ठे वा  शाकं पचते स्वे गृहे  |
अनृणी  चाSप्रवासी च  स  वारिचर मोदते  || - सुभाषित रत्नाक र

भावार्थ -     जिस व्यक्ति के घर में यद्दपि प्रत्येक पांचवे या छठे
दिन (गरीबी  के कारण ) केवल शाक ही भोजन के  रूप  में पकता
हो , परन्तु उसके ऊपर यदि कोई ऋणं (कर्ज) न हो तथा वह  परदेस
में  निवास करता हो  तो ऐसा व्यक्ति  जल  में  निवास  करने वाले
प्राणियों के समान संतुष्ट और प्रसन्न रहता है |

(यह सुभाषित 'संतोष  प्रशंसा ' शीर्षक के अन्तर्गत संकलित है तथा
इस में संतोषी व्यक्ति तुलना जल में निवास करने वाले प्राणियों से
की गयी  है जो अभाव की स्थिति  में  भी सदैव संतुष्ट और प्रसन्न
रहते हैं क्योंकि उन्हे आगामी कल  की चिन्ता कभी नहीं होती है  )

Panchamehani shashthe vaa shaakam pachati sve gruhe.
Anrunee chaapravaasee cha sa vaarichara modate.

Panchamehani = panchame + ahani.   Panchame = fifth.
Ahani = day.    Shjashthe = sixth.   Vaa = or.    Shaakam =
vegetables.      Pachati = cooked.      Sve = his own.
Gruhe = home, residence.   Anrunee = free from any debt.
Chaapravaasee =   cha +  Apravasee.                Cha = and.
 Apravaasee = immigrant.      Sa = he.             Vaarichar =
an aquatic animal.      Modate = be happy,  rejoices.

i.e.            A person may be able to afford (due to poverty) a
frugal meal of  ordinary vegetables only every fifth or sixth
day at  his home, but if he is free from any debts and lives in
a foreign country,  he still enjoys a  carefree and happy life
like the creatures living under water.

(The above Subhashita is classified under the sub-head "Santosh"
i.e. satisfaction. Here a satisfied person has been compared to
the creatures living under water,  who lead a carefree life in spite
of hardships and shortages.)
