Today's Subhashita.
Today's Subhashita.

Aarto devaan namasyanti tapah kurvanti roginah.
Nirdhanaah daanamicchanti vruddhaa naaree pativrutaa.
Nirdhanaah daanamicchanti vruddhaa naaree pativrutaa.
Aarto = distressed. Devaan = Gods. Namasyanti = worship.
Tapah = penance, act of self punishment. Kurvanti = do.
Roginah = sick persons. Nirdhanaah = poor people.
Daanamicchanti = daanam + icchanti. Daanam = donation.
Icchanti = wish. Vriddhaa = aged. Naree a woman.
Pativrataa = devoted and virtuous.

Pativrataa = devoted and virtuous.
i.e. Only distressed persons worship the Gods and sick persons
observe penance like an ascetic. Poor people always crave for
donation and an aged woman becomes a devoted and virtuous wife.

(The above Subhashita is a satire criticizing people who worship
the Gods only when they are distressed, appreciate penance only
when they are sick , appreciate charity when they are poor, and
women become virtuous and devoted to their husbands when
they become aged.)
