उपकार   गृहीतेन  शत्रुणा   शत्रुमुद्धरेत्      |
पादलग्नं  करस्थेन  कण्टकेनेव  कण्टकं  || - महासुभषितसंग्रह

भावार्थ -    जिस शत्रु ने हमसे किसी प्रकार का उपकार या सहायता
प्राप्त की हो (और अब हमारे पक्ष में हो ) ,उस की सहायता के द्वारा
हमें अपने किसी अन्य  शत्रु से उसी प्रकार छुटकारा पा लेना चाहिये
जिस प्रकार कि पांव में चुभे एक कांटे  को अपने  हाथ में पकडे  हुए
एक अन्य  कांटे की सहायता से बाहर निकाल लेते हैं |

Upakaar gruhetena shatrunaam  shatrumuddharet.
Padalagnam karasthena kantakeneva kantakam.

Upakaar =  favour, help.      Gruheetena = one who has
received a favour.   Shatrunaam = enemies.  Shatrumuddharet =
shatrum + uddharet.   Shatrum = enemies.    Uddharet= rescued,
get rid off,    Paadlagnam = sticking on the feet.   Karasthena =
held  by the  hand.    Kantakeneva = kantakena + iva,        Iva =
in the same manner.   Kantakena = by a thorn.      Kantakam =.
a thorn.

i.e.           We should get rid of an enemy with the help of  our
other enemy (whom we have favoured in some way and who is
now  in good terms with  us) , in  the same manner as a  thorn
embedded in our feet is removed with the help of another thorn.
