Today's Subhashita.

उपकर्तुं यथा स्वल्पं समर्थो न तथा महान्  |

प्रायः कूपस्तृषां हन्ति सततं न तु वारिधिः ||  - महासुभषितसंग्रह 

भावार्थ -  जिस प्रकार एक साधारण व्यक्ति अन्य व्यक्तियों का  

उपकार करने  में समर्थ होता है  एक महान व्यक्ति उसी  प्रकार  

समर्थ नहीं हो सकता  है | उदाहरण स्वरूप  एक साधारण कुंवां ही 

निरन्तर सामान्य जनों की  प्यास बुझाता है न कि विशाल समुद्र |

( यद्द्दपि जल का सबसे बडा भण्डार समुद्र ही है उस का जल खारा 

होने के कारण पीने के योग्य नहीं होता है | इसी तरह् यद्यपि महान 

व्यक्ति अधिक संपन्न और शक्तिशाली होते  है परन्तु उन तक पहुंच 

पाना सामान्य जन के लिये संभव  नही होता है|  अतः  वे आपस में  ही  

सरलता पूर्वक एक दूसरे के सहायक हो जाते हैं | इसी तथ्य को एक कूप 

और समुद्र  की उपमा  के द्वारा इस सुभाषित  में  बडी सुन्दरता से 

व्यक्त  किया गया है | 

Upakartum yathaa svalpam samartho na tathaa mahaan.

Praayah koopastrushaam  hanti satatam na tu vaaridhih.

Upakartum = one who benefits others.   Yatha = for instance.\

Svalpam = small., ordinary.    Samartho = competent, able.

.Na = not.   Tathaa = in that manner.   Mahaan = great person.

Praayah = generally, perhaps.   Koopastrushaam = Koopah+

Trushaam .     Koopah = a well of potable water.  Trushaam =

thirst.    Hanti = beats, kills.            Satatam =  continuously.

Na = not.     Tu = but.     Vaaridhih = an ocean,

i.e.        The manner in which an ordinary person is able to help 

others, a great person is not able to do so in the same manner. 

For example an ordinary well of potable water is able to quench

the thirst of people but not the Ocean.

(In spite of being the largest source of water, the water of the

Ocean is not  easily accessible and is not potable, whereas water 

of a well is easily available and potable also..  Such is also the case 

of  people in high position in the society and the ordinary people.  

Ordinary people come forward for the assistance of each other,,

and a well in this Subhashita.)
