Today's Subhashita.

उपकारपरः प्रवरः प्रत्युपकारं करोति मध्यमः  |
नीचस्तदपि न कुरुते उपकार्वशाद्भवति शत्रुः सः  || - महासुभषितसंग्रह

भावार्थ -    जो व्यक्ति स्वेच्छा से अन्य लोगों  का उपकार करते है  वे
सर्वोत्तम श्रेणी के व्यक्ति होते हैं |  जो व्यक्ति उपकृत किये जाने पर
कृतज्ञता प्रकट करते है या स्वयं भी उपकार करते  हैं वे मध्यम  श्रेणी
के व्यक्ति होते हैं.  परन्तु निम्नतम  श्रेणी  के नीच प्रकृति  के व्यक्ति
न तो स्वयं उपकार  करते हैं और जो व्यक्ति उनके प्रति उपकार करता
है उसे वे अपना शत्रु समझते हैं  |

Upakaarapahar pravarah pratupakaaram karoti madhyamah.
Neechastadapi na kurute  upakaarvashaaadbhavati shatruh sah.

Upakaarparah = upakaar + parah.    Upakaara = helping\ obliging
others.        Parah =  others.        Pravarah = most excellent.
Pratyupakaaram = returning the favour with gratitude,    Karoti =
does.    Madhyamah = intermediate, in the middle.   Neechastadapi=
Neechah + tadapi.     Neechah = lowest,  mean.    Na =  not.
Kurute =  does.   Upakaarvashaadbhavati = upakaara+ vashaat +
bhavati.     Vashaat = subject to, dependent on.   Bhavati =becomes.
Shatruh = an enemy.    Sahh =   he.

i.e.   Those persons who willingly help and oblige other needy persons
are of excellent category, and those persons, who on being obliged
return the favour with gratitude, are of the middle category.  However,
persons of lowest category, who are mean and wicked, never help others
and on the other hand treat the person who has helped them as their
enemy.
