बुद्धिः लुम्पति यद्द्रव्यं मदकारी तदुच्यते |
तमोगुण प्रधाने च यथा मद्य सुरादिकम् ||
भावार्थ - जिस प्रकार के द्रव पदार्थ के पीने से कुछ समय के
लिये बुद्धि भृष्ट (नष्ट) हो जाती है उन्हें मद (नशा) उत्पन्न करने
वाला तथा तमोगुण प्रधान पदार्थ कहा जाता है जैसे कि मद्य
तथा सुरा आदि |
Buddhih lumpati yaddravyam madaakaaree taduchyate.
Tamoguna praadhaano cha yatha mada suraadikam,
Buddhih = presence of mind, mental attitude. Lumpati =
disappears. Yad-drayvam = yat + dravyam. Yat = that
Dravyam = liquid. Madakaaree = causing intoxication.
Taduchyate + tat +uchyate. Tat = that. Uchyate = to be
regarded as. Tamoguna = quality of darkness or ignorance.
Pradhane = chiefly. Cha = and. Yathaa = for instance.
Mada = liquor. Suraadikam = suraa + aadikam. Suraa =
wine. Aadikam = etc.
i.e. Those liquids which on being consumed cause
temporary disappearance of the presence of mind and
bring out baser instincts among persons are termed as
intoxicants, for example liquor and wine.
