आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

कार्पासं कटिविमुक्तं कौशेयं भोजनावधि |
ऊर्णवस्त्रं सदा शुद्धं ऊर्णा वातेन शुध्यति  || - महासुभषितसंग्रह(९७२३)

भावार्थ -   कपास से बने हुए वस्त्र कमर से नीचे के अंगों को ढकने
के लिये प्रयुक्त करने चाहिये तथा रेशमी वस्त्र भोजन करते समय
ही प्रयुक्त करने चाहिये |   ऊन से बने हुए वस्त्र सदैव शुद्ध माने जाते
हैं क्यों कि वे बहती हुई  वायु के संपर्क में आने से ही शुद्ध हो जाते हैं |

( इस सुभाषित से हमें अपने पूर्वजों के परिधानों की पसंद तथा उनकी
उपयोगिता तथा रख रखाव का वर्णन प्राप्त होता है | तब सिले सिलाये
वस्त्रों का प्रचलन नहीं था | अतः अधोवस्त्रों के लिये सूत के वस्त्रों तथा
विशेष अवसरों के लिये रेशमी तथा ऊनी वस्त्रों को पसंद किया जाता था)

Kaarpaasam kativimuktam kausheyam bhojanaavadhi .
Oornavastram sadaa shuddham oornaa vaatena shudhyati.

Kaarpaasam = cotton.   Kati  = waist.   Vimuktam = flowing
or freed from.    Kausheyam= silk, silken cloth   Bhojanaavadhi
= bhojana +avadhi.    Bhojana = meals.    Avadhi = period,  until.
Oorna = wool, woollen.   Vastram = garments.   Sadaa = always.
Shuddham = pure, cleansed.   Vaatena = by a blowing wind.
Shudhyati = gets cleansed or purified.

i.e.     Cotton garments should be used to cover the body from
the waist downwards and silken garments only while having
meals.   Woollen garments are treated as pure and cleansed at all
times, because they get cleansed or purified by a blowing wind,

(This Subhashita gives us a glimpse of the dress sense of people
thousands of years back. Stitched garments were no in vogue then.
Therefore, cotton garments for the lower portion of the body  and
silken and woollen garments were preferred  for special occasions.)
