क्षुत्क्षामोSपि जराकृशोSपि शिथिलप्रायोSपि कष्टां दशा -
मापन्नोSपि विपन्नदीधितिरपि प्राणेषु गच्छत्स्वपि |
मत्तेभेन्द्रविभिन्नकुम्भदलनग्रासैकबद्धस्प्रहः
किं जीर्णं तृणमत्ति मानमहतामग्रेसरः केसरी ||

भावार्थ - महान और शक्तिशाली प्राणियों में अग्रणी वनराज सिंह जो
मदमस्त हाथियों के मस्तक के मांस के टुकडों से अपनी क्षुधा शान्त करने
का आदी हो, अपनी वृद्धावस्था के कारण दुबळा, शिथिल, तेजहीन ,भूख से
व्याकुल , अत्यन्त कष्ट मे प्राण जाने की स्थिति में होने पर भी क्या सूखी
घास के तिनकों से अपनी क्षुधा शान्त कर सकता है ?
(यह सुभाषित 'सिंहान्योक्ति ' शीर्षक के अन्तर्गत संकलित है | एक सिंह
चाहे भूखा रह कर मर जाये फिर भी वह घास खा कर अपनी भूख नहीं मिटाता
है लाक्षणिक रूप से इस का तात्पर्य यह है कि महान व्यक्ति कोई ऐसा कार्य
नहीं करते हैं जो उनकी गरिमा के विपरीत हो चाहे उनके प्राण भी संकट में क्यों
न हों |

Kshutkshamo = emaciated by hunger. Api = even. Jaraa = old age
Krusho = weak, thin. Shithilapraayo = very weak. Kashtaaam =
difficulties, troubles. Dashaam = condition. Apanno = entered.
Vipanna =afflicted, ruined. Deedhitih = majesty. Preneshu =
breathe of life. Gacchatsu = go. Mattebha + indra+vibhinna+kumbha+
dalana+graasaik +baddhasprahah. Mattebha = ruttish. Indra = chief.
Vibhinna = various. Kumbha = elephants. Dalan = breaking,splitting.
Graasaika = bites. Baddha = capture. Sprahah = desirous of..
Kim = what. Jeernam = old, senile. Truna = grass. Matti = drunk.
Maaana+mahataam + agresarah. Maana = self respect. Mahataam =
great and mighty. Agresarah = going in front. Kesari = a Lion.
i.e. A lion , foremost among the animals of a forest, who is accustomed
of feeding himself with the flesh of the lobes on the forehead of a drunk
elephant , on becoming very thin, weak and emaciated due to hunger and
old age , and may even breathe his last , can he stoop so low as to eat grass
to satiate his hunger ?
(The above Subhashita is an 'anyokti (allegory) based on a Lion. The idea
behind it is that just as a lion may die of hunger, he will never eat grass to
satiate his hunger.,in the same manner noble and great persons do not act
in such a way which may be below dignity.for them and even sacrifice their
life to preserve their status and dignity.)
