आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

           
संतप्तायसि  संस्थितस्य पयसो नामापि न श्रूयते
मुक्ताकारस्त या  तदेव नलिनीपत्रस्थितं राजते       |
मध्ये सागरशुक्तिमध्य  पतितं तन्मौक्तिकं जायते
प्रायेणाधम  मध्यमोत्तमगुणा: संसर्गतो देहिनाम्    ||
                                            - भर्तृहरि (नीति शतक)
भावार्थ  -   जल की एक बूंद् जब अत्यन्त तप्त (गरम) लोहे के ऊपर
पडती है तो उसका नाम भी नहीं सुनाई देता है (वह भाप बन कर उड
जाती है ) | वही बूंद जब एक कमल पुष्प के पत्ते के ऊपर पडती है तो
एक सुन्दर और गोल मोती के समान उस पर सुशोभित होती है | और
यदि सागर के मध्य में किसी सीपी के अन्दर गिर जाती है तो कालान्तर
में वह मोती बन जाती है |  इसी प्रकार मनुष्य  भी यदि नीच व्यक्तियों
के संपर्क में वे आते है तो वैसे ही अधम (नीच)और यदि गुणवान (उत्तम)
व्यक्तियों  के संपर्क में आते हैं तो वैसे ही गुणवान हो जाते हैं |

Smtaptaayasi smsthitasya payaso naamaapi na  shrooyate.
Muktaakaarastayaa tadeva nalineepatra-sthitam raajate.
Madhye saagara-shuktimadhya patitam tanmauktikam jaayate.
Praayenaadhama madhyamottamagunaah smsargato dehinaam.

Smtaptaayasi = smtapta + ayasi.    Smtapta = very hot.   Ayasi=
iron.  Smsthitasya = lying, falling into.   Payaso = water.
Naamaapi = naam +api.   Naam = name.   Api = even.   Na = not.
Shrooyate =is heard.  Muktaakaarastayaa=Muktaakaarah +tayaa.
Muktaaakarah = round shaped like a pearl.   Tayaa = with her/it.
Tadeva = that.   Nalineepatra = a leaf of lotus plant.   Sthitam =
resting on.   Raajate =  shines, appears as.   Maadhye =  within.
Saagara = sea.   Shukti =oyster shell.   Madhya = middle,centre.
Patitam=dropped, fallen into.  Tanmauktikam=tam+mauktikam.
Tam=it. Mauktikam=pearl.  Jaayate=becomes.  Praayenaadham=
Praayena + adham.   Praayena =   mostly, generally.      Adham =
very low or bad.   Madhyamottamagunaah =madhyam + uttam +
gunaah   Madhyam = middle.   Uttama= excellent.   Gunaah =
virtues.   Sansargato = co-existing with.  Dehinaam = persons.

i.e.     When a drop of water falls over heated iron one does not
hear about it again ( it evaporates immediately), but when it falls
over the leaf of a lotus plant , it takes a round shape and shines
like a pearl . And if the drop of water falls in the middle of the sea
inside an oyster shell, it ultimately turns into a beautiful pearl.
In the same manner if a person keeps the company of mean and
bad people he too becomes bad and if he keeps the company of
noble and virtuous persons he too becomes virtuous.
