भावार्थ - जिस प्रकार एक कुत्ते को अपना पेट भरने के लिये
अपने स्वामीं के सामने अपने पैरों को झुका कर , पूंछ को बार
बार हिला कर , भूमि पर लोट पोट कर अपने शरीर और पेट को
दिखाना पडता है उसी प्रकार एक विशाल हाथी को भी धैर्य और
आदर पूर्वक ऐसे ही सैकडों करतब दिखाने पडते हैं |
(प्रस्तुत सुभाषित 'उदरपूरणदूषणम्' शीर्षक से संकलित है | एक कुत्ते
तथा एक हाथी के व्यवहार के माध्यम से यह व्यक्त किया गया है कि
अपने भोजन की व्यवस्था करने के लिये सभी प्राणियों को भी कभी
निम्नतम श्रेणी के कार्यों को करने के लिये भी बाध्य होना पडता है | )

Laangoola = tail. Chaalanam = wagging. Adhah =
down, below. Charanaavapatam =charana+avapaatam.
Charana = feet. Avapaatam = falling down. Bhoomau=
on the ground. Nipatya = rolling . Vadana = body.
Udar =belly. Darshanam=exposing, showing up. Cha=
and. Shvaa =a dog. Pinddasya = the master's Kurute =
does. Gajapungavastu=gajapungavah+tu. Gajapungavah =
a large elephant. Tu = and, but. Dheeram = gently,
patiently. Vilokayati = sees. Chatushataihscha =
Chaatushataih + cha. Chatushataih =hundred entreaties.
Cha = and. Bhunkte = eats.
i.e. To get some food and satiate his hunger , a dog has to
bow before his master , wag his tail , roll on the ground by
exposing his belly, and look reverentially and patiently towards
his master. In the same manner even a big elephant too has to do
hundreds of entreaties.
(This Subhashita is classified as 'Problems faced while supporting
oneself'. Through the examples of a dog and an elephant , the
author has highlighted the fact that at times one has to perform
lowest types of work to support himself.)
