आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

धनुः पौश्पं मौर्वी मधुकरमयी चञ्चलदृशां
दृषां कोणो बाणः सुहृदविजितात्मा  हिमकरः  |
तथाप्येकोSनङ्गस्त्रिभुवनमपि व्याकुलयति
क्रियासिद्धिः सत्वे भवति महतां नोपकरणे     ||

भावार्थ -   प्रेम के देवता कामदेव का धनुष पुष्पों से बना हुआ है  तथा
उसकी प्रत्यंचा भ्रमरों से बनी है , चञ्चल नेत्रों की तिरछी दृष्टि उसके
बाण हैं तथा सबके मन को प्रभावित करने वाला चन्द्रमा उसका मित्र है
फिर भी अकेला ही कामदेव तीनों लोकों को अपने  प्रभाव से व्याकुल कर
देता है |  सच है महान और शक्तिशाली व्यक्तियों के कार्य उनके पराक्रम
से सिद्ध होते हैं न  कि उनके विभिन्न उपकरणों के कारण |
(प्रस्तुत सुभाषित 'महाजनप्रशंसा ' शीर्षक के अन्तर्गत संकलित है | इस
 की पृष्ठभूमि में पुराणों में वर्णित कथानक है जिसमें कामदेव को भगवान
शिव द्वारा भस्म किये जाने का तथा बाद में उसकी पत्नी रति को वरदान
देने का वर्णन है, कि अब वह बिना शरीर के ही सभी प्राणियों पर व्याप्त होगा |   
तभी से उसका नाम 'अनङ्ग' भी हो गया |  लाक्षणिक रूप से इस का तात्पर्य
यह है कि महान और शक्तिशाली व्यक्ति अपने पराक्रम के बल बूते पर ही
अपने कार्य सिद्ध करते हैं और केवल  उपकरणों पर ही  निर्भर नहीं रहते हैं |)

Dhanuh paushpam maurvee madhukara-mayee chanchala-drushaam.
Drushaam kono  baanah suhruda-vijitaatmaa himakarah.
Tathaapyeko-nanga-stribhuvana-mapi vyaakulayati.
Kriyaa-siddhih satve  bhavati mahataam nopakarane.

Dhanuh = the bow.   Pushpam = flowers.   Maurvee = string of a bow.
Madhukaramayee = consisting of honey bees.  Chanchal = moving,
flickring.    Drushaam = eyes.   kono = corner,  (sideways glance  by
the eyes)      Baanah = arrows.   Suhruda =  friend.    Vijjitaatmaa =
winner of minds,  Himakarah =Moon. ( Tathaa + api + eko + anangah +
tribhuvanam + api.)  Tathaa = even then.    Eko= alone.   Ananga=
The God of Love in Hindu Mythology, who is bodiless but controls
the activities of all living beings.   Tribhuvanam= three worlds i.e.
earth, sky and the underworld.  Vyakulayati=agitates. Kriyaasidddhi=
accomplishment of an action.   Satve =  valour .   Bhavati = happens
Mahataam = great men.   Nopakarane = na + upakarane,   Na = not.
Upakarane =  tools for accomplishing a task, 

i,e,     The bow of 'Ananga' , the God of Love, is made of flowers and
its string is comprised of bees, the arrows are the sideways glance of a
beautiful lady, and the Moon, who controls the minds of all, is his close
friend.  Yet, the God of Love  alone  agitates and controls all the living
beings on all the three worlds.  Truly, all the great and powerful  persons
depend more on  their valour rather than on the tools for accomplishing
them.

(The above Subhashita is classified as 'In praise of great men' .The episode
of killing the God of Love by God Shiva, described in Hindu Mythology,
is the background of this verse.  God Shiva gave a boon to the wife of the
God of Love that henceforth he will control all living beings without having
any body. So, the idea behind this Subhashita is that great men depend more
on their valour rather than on the tools for accomplishing any task.)
