अहिंसा लक्षणो धर्मोSधर्मश्च प्राणिनां वधः |
तस्मात् धर्मार्थिभिर्लोके कर्तव्या प्राणिनां दया ||
भावार्थ - अहिंसा (किसी को भी हानि न पहुंचाना) धर्म पालन का प्रमुख
लक्षण है तथा प्राणियों का वध करना अधर्म (पापकर्म) है | इसी लिये
समाज के धार्मिक प्रवृत्ति के लोगों का यह कर्तव्य है कि वे सभी प्राणियों
के प्रति दया की भावना रखें |
Ahimsaa lakshano dharmodharmashcha praninaam vadhah.
Tasmaat dharmaarthibhih loke kartavyaa praaninaam dayaa.
Ahimsaa = nonviolence, harmlessness. Lakshano = symptom,
definition. Dharmodharmaashcha Dharmo + adharmaah+cha.
Dharmo = religious austerrity. Adharma = unrighteousness, sin.
Cha = and. Praaninaam = all living beings. Vadhah = killing.
Tasmaat = therefore. Dharmaarthibhih = pious and righteous.
Loke = community, people. Kartavyaa = to be done, duty.
Dayaa = mercy, compassion.
i.e. Nonviolence (not causing any harm to all living beings) is the
main tenet of religious austerity, and killing the living beings is a
sinful act. Therefore, it is the duty of pious and righteous persons
of the community to be merciful and compassionate towards all the
living beings on the Earth.
