आज का सुभाषित. / Today's Subhashita.

वृद्धकाले  मृता  भार्या  बन्धुहस्त  गतं  धनम्  |
भोजनं  च  पराधीनं  तिस्रा :  पुंसां  विडम्बना  ||
                                   -  चाणक्य नीति (८/९ )
भावार्थ -  वृद्धावस्था  में यदि कोई  व्यक्ति अपनी  पत्नी की मृत्यु  हो
जाने से अकेला हो जाय , उसकी धन-संपत्ति भी उसके मित्रों के हाथों में
चली गयी हो (उन्हें दिया हुआ ऋण वे वापस न कर रहे हों) तथा अपनी
दैनिक भोजन  की व्यवस्था के लिये भी उसे पराधीन रहना पडे तो यह
तीनों परिस्थितियां उसके लिये एक  विडम्बना (अत्यन्त विषम, हताश
करने वाली और कष्टदायक स्थिति) के समान है |
( किसी कवि ने भी कहा है कि - 'पराधीन सपनहुं  सुख नाहीं )

Vruddhakaale  mrutaa  bhaaryaa bandhuhasta gatam dhanam.
bhojanam  cha  paraadheenam  tisraah  pumsaam  vidambanaa.

Vruddhakaale = during old age.   Mrutaa = dead.    Bhaaryaa =
wife.   Bandhuhast= in the possession of a friend.  Gatam =gone.
Dhanam = wealth, money.   Bhojanam = food.   cha =  and.
Paraadheenam = dependent upon others.   Tisraah = (these)three.
Pumsaam =  men.   Vidambanaa = frustrating, vexatious, causing
annoyance or trouble.

i.e.    If the wife of a aged person dies and leaves him alone, his
money and wealth is under the control of his friends (by way of
loans given by him to them which they are not repaying) ,  he is
dependent on others for his daily meals, then these three situations
are very frustrating and also causing trouble to him.

(There is a saying that a person totally dependent on others can not
be happy even in his dreams.)
